Fed week, with the real argument about December

The whole week is organised around the FOMC decision on Wednesday October 28, with Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference after. The Fed is in blackout. Fed funds futures imply roughly a 90% chance of a hold at 3.75%-4.00%, and Kalshi traders put the October hold at 93% versus about 6% for a hike. Goldman Sachs expects a skip in October followed by a 25bp hike in December, and headline items note Wall Street has largely moved the debate to December rather than this week. Note the direction of travel here: this is a tightening discussion, not a cutting one, driven by inflation that headline summaries tie to energy. Thursday brings advance Q3 GDP, where expectations cited in one gold note run around 3.2%, plus PCE inflation. The ECB decides Thursday October 29 and is widely expected to hold. Headline-only items also flag a Bank of Canada hike expected Wednesday to counter energy-inflation spillover, Pakistan's central bank raising to 12%, and Russia holding at 14.00%.

Chicago Fed index turns positive

The September Chicago Fed National Activity Index rose to +0.07 from -0.08, putting growth slightly above historical trend. Production strengthened, employment was flat, and consumer spending and housing weakened. The summary framing was that US growth remains resilient despite mixed signals. Replies under the post immediately picked up the obvious tension, that weakening consumer spending sits awkwardly against a hike discussion.

Brazil election shock

Lula won a fourth term with about 51.8% against Flávio Bolsonaro's 48.2%. Bolsonaro has not conceded and is trying to annul the result. Futures on the real fell 10% in Asian trading and EWZ was down about 25% in premarket. US-listed Brazilian names were broadly lower, including ITUB, BBD, NU, PBR, VALE, MELI, STNE and PAGS, with sympathy weakness in names carrying Brazil exposure such as SAN, BUD and ARCO.

Oil falls on Iran remarks, gold recovers $4,000

Oil retreated after Trump's latest Iran comments, with WTI down about 2.4% near $101 and Brent off roughly 2% to around $114. That pulled oil majors lower, EQNR, BP, SHEL, COP, XOM and CVX among them. Gold moved the other way, back above $4,000 after its first close below that level, with two separate TradingView pieces attributing the bounce to softer crude easing the inflation impulse and therefore some of the pressure on the Fed. One of them puts 4,000-4,008 as the pivot zone, the other frames $4,000 as support at the summer triple-bottom area and just under the 38.2% weekly Fibonacci retracement, with volume likely thin into Wednesday. Separately, CFTC positioning showed gold speculative net longs down to 199.9K from 207.9K and silver down to 19.8K from 22.6K. A headline-only Kitco item notes gold fell $90 on October 22 even as oil touched $100, the dollar fell and yields fell, which normally would have helped it.

Euro and yen into the central bank meetings

EURUSD is holding around $1.12. One note points to French 10-year yields having pushed above 5% and staying near there on fiscal worries, with the ECB likely holding Thursday and a December hike possible, leaving a rate differential of 1.25-1.5 points favouring the dollar for the next couple of months. A separate headline says French yields retreated from 2002 highs after Moody's held. A second EURUSD piece sees the pair consolidating after breaking its rising trendline with the Fed and ECB as the catalysts. On the yen, USDJPY is near 157.4 ahead of the BOJ later this week. The BOJ is expected to hold at 1.25% with a hawkish tone, and a Reuters poll found nearly 70% of economists expect a move to 1.50% in December. Japan's core CPI rose 2.1% year-on-year in September, and the yen has also picked up some safe-haven bid during the AI and tech selloff. CFTC data showed JPY speculative net longs rising to 69.9K from 50.2K.

Last week's data in brief

Friday's US releases, headline-only: Michigan consumer sentiment 48.0 against 46.3 consensus and 48.1 prior, current conditions 46.7 versus 44.7 expected but down from 50.9, expectations 48.8 versus 47.3. One-year inflation expectations 4.7%, five-year 3.5%, both roughly in line and both ticking up from prior. European flash PMIs were mixed: UK composite 53.1 against 51.8 expected, Germany composite 52.8 slightly short of 53.3, euro zone composite 51.9 versus 52.7, and France fell into contraction at 48.4 on both services and composite. UK retail sales were weak at -0.4% against -0.1% expected.

Sell-side positioning views

Ed Yardeni said he expects more volatility but treats selloffs as buying opportunities, citing earnings and economic fundamentals, with an S&P 500 target of 7,900 by year-end and 8,400 by mid-2027 on projected 2027 earnings of $425 per share. He lists geopolitical escalation, Fed hikes, midterm uncertainty and AI investment concerns as the risks. Morgan Stanley's Michael Wilson, headline-only, sees the correction ending as risks including the midterms clear, with near-term downside of 7,100-7,200 and a year-end base case of 8,000. A headline-only Goldman note warns global growth risks are building into 2027 from higher energy prices, rising bond yields and slowing AI investment. Goldman also reported that trend-following hedge funds had their worst week since 2024 as AI stocks fell, and HSBC turned cautious short term while staying bullish for 2027. CFTC positioning had S&P 500 speculative net shorts at -142.7K and Nasdaq 100 net longs at 50.7K, both little changed.

Equity backdrop into the open

US futures were slightly higher premarket, SPY +0.12% and QQQ +0.16%, after a bruising week for tech. The week's calendar is heavy: Alphabet and Microsoft report Wednesday. Today's US data is light, the Chicago Fed index at 08:30, Dallas Fed manufacturing at 10:30, bill auctions at 11:30 and the 2-year note auction at 13:00, which follows a previous stop of 4.787%. Among single-name movers flagged in the research note, EQT agreed to buy Range Resources in an all-stock deal worth about $50bn with Range holders receiving 0.987 EQT shares and EQT holders expected to own around 73% of the combined company. Meta launched a $35bn stock offering to fund AI expansion. SpaceX borrowed $40bn, and Barclays upgraded Tesla saying a SpaceX merger is now part of the bull case. Verizon gapped down on results despite adding 406,000 postpaid phone subscribers, its best third quarter in five years, a third straight guidance raise and a $2bn-plus AI infrastructure deal with AWS.

Crypto soft into the Fed

Ether futures were trading near 2,335 after an October 24 low of 2,276, down about 12% in October from a peak near 2,777 on October 2. US spot Ether ETFs had about $1.1bn of net outflows over three weeks as of October 24, including $110.6m on October 22 alone, most of it from BlackRock's ETHA. The Ethereum Foundation also postponed the Glamsterdam test on the Hoodi testnet on October 22 over gas-accounting concerns tied to EIP 8037, with no new date set. Bitcoin is down only about 3% over the same stretch though it hit a five-week low near 79,100 on Saturday, and XRP has lost roughly 20%. A headline-only item has bitcoin recovering to $80,800 ahead of the Fed.

Everything else

The remainder of this section is mostly noise for your purposes: a large volume of TradingView chart setups on gold, the indices, EURUSD and bitcoin, routine CFTC positioning lines, Baker Hughes rig counts flat at 603 total, and economic calendar stubs for Asian and European releases where the source page returned no data. One full-text item, Dalmia Bharat's Q2 FY27 slides, is an Indian cement earnings report rather than macro, but it is a useful read-through on energy costs: power and fuel costs rose 20% year-on-year to Rs 1,224 per ton, EBITDA per ton fell to Rs 698 from Rs 1,013, and the company swung to a Rs 205 crore loss. It cites US imported petcoke prices up 20% and diesel up 37% to September 2026.
