Brief

The macro driver behind almost everything

The one thread running through the whole feed is the hot September US CPI print from the prior session. Core inflation accelerated as higher energy costs fed through, and that revived bets on at least one more Fed hike before year-end, with New York Fed President John Williams signalling as much and UBS, per a headline here, now looking for a third hike. The result was an AI and tech rout: Nasdaq futures down more than 1% pre-open, the Nasdaq Composite off 1.88% on the day, S&P 500 down 1.11%, VIX up near 4.9%, while the Dow was roughly flat and gold futures rose about 1.4% to the $4,165 area. Headlines also note the KOSPI triggering a circuit breaker, chipmakers sinking globally, and a UK counterpoint where the FTSE gained on a GDP beat that two separate pieces say opens the door to Bank of England hikes.

ManpowerGroup down 18.3% on revenue miss and CEO change

The largest single move with substance behind it was ManpowerGroup, down 18.3% in pre-open trading. Q3 revenue of $4.84 billion missed the roughly $4.91 billion expected. GAAP net income was $34.1 million, or $0.71 a share, against $1.01 adjusted, the $0.30 gap coming from restructuring, strategic transformation costs, a business sale adjustment and Argentina hyperinflationary currency translation losses. Alongside the print the board named Becky Frankiewicz CEO effective 1 January 2027, with Jonas Prising moving to executive chair. Consensus EPS had already drifted from $1.06 to $1.01 over three months. The stock was quoted at $42.43 against a 52-week range of $25.15 to $63.88.

Scisparc up 37% on a pivot to agentic AI

Scisparc rose 37.0% pre-open, from a $3.68 close to as high as $5.04, after announcing a full strategic shift into agentic AI technologies aimed at cybersecurity and fintech. The Tel Aviv company has historically been a clinical-stage pharma developer via its majority-owned NeuroThera Labs subsidiary, and had flagged the AI ambition in July and formed an AI and cybersecurity advisory board in August. It cautioned that there is no guarantee the effort produces transactions or revenue. No new analyst ratings accompanied it; the standing ratings on file are a hold and a sell.

FMC collapses on cut guidance

Headline-only, but worth flagging: FMC tumbled 35% after cutting its Q3 outlook, with separate headlines citing weak demand and inventory issues and charges of $625 million to $675 million. Two items ask why the stock is "collapsing"; the detail beyond that isn't in the feed.

Earnings beats: Commercial Metals, Kimberly-Clark, Schwab

Commercial Metals rose 3.93% pre-open on fiscal Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.09 versus about $1.96 expected and revenue of $2.66 billion against $2.56 billion. Core EBITDA rose 35.1% to $393.7 million, margin up 100bp to 14.8%; full-year net earnings were $655.8 million and core EBITDA $1.4 billion versus $837.3 million in fiscal 2025. North America Steel EBITDA rose 32.6% to $317.5 million, metal margins up $84 a ton to $652, volumes up 5.3%. The company bought back $26.7 million of stock and cut net leverage below its 2x target. Precast fell short of management expectations on regional residential softness, and the World Steel Association cut its 2026 global demand forecast to roughly flat last week. Kimberly-Clark surged 3.7% after filing preliminary Q3 figures with the SEC: net sales $4.13 billion against $4.1 billion consensus, adjusted EPS $1.70 against $1.60, 2026 outlook unchanged, plus European Commission clearance for the Kenvue acquisition conditional on divesting its tampon and feminine hygiene brands in the region. It expects full-year organic sales growth about 100bp below weighted average category growth, blaming China social media disruptions. TD Cowen had cut its target to $97 from $104 two days earlier on a Hold. Charles Schwab posted Q3 EPS of $1.69, three cents above the $1.66 estimate, on revenue of $7.17 billion versus $7.2 billion expected; the stock closed at $96.80 and has had 10 positive and 5 negative EPS revisions in 90 days.

Upgrades driving Walmart, Quantinuum and Fortrea

A cluster of broker moves did real work today. Walmart was up 2.6% pre-open after Deutsche Bank went to Buy from Hold with a $136 target, up from $113. Analyst Krisztina Katai argued persistent inflation strengthens Walmart's value proposition and share gains, with advertising, marketplace and membership outgrowing core retail. That compounded the rotation out of growth into staples after the CPI print, with Costco and Target also higher in the prior session, and the company's announced 2027 benefit covering over 250 prescription drugs including GLP-1s and insulin at no cost to eligible associates. Quantinuum rose 4.5% after Morgan Stanley's Joseph Moore upgraded it to Overweight with a $62 target and named it his top quantum pick, arguing it leads pure-play peers on technology and execution while trading at the lowest multiple on the firm's 2030 revenue estimates; the same note kept IonQ at Equalweight and started Infleqtion and Xanadu at Equalweight. Insiders have bought about $24.7 million of stock over the past year with no reported sales. Fortrea gained 3.8% on a Deutsche Bank upgrade to Buy with the target lifted to $25 from $20, ahead of Q3 results on 29 October; Zacks cut it to Strong Sell the same day, which so far hasn't bitten.

Crypto names and Venture Global

Coinbase fell 1.6% pre-open to $170.18, extending the prior session's drop, as Bitcoin slid to roughly $81,000, a week low, on the same inflation data. Monness kept a Sell and Wells Fargo issued a Hold in the past 24 hours, and consensus EPS for the 29 October Q3 report has moved sharply lower with a large year-on-year revenue decline expected. Riot Platforms slipped 3.3% to $14.61 on the same macro, compounded by Morgan Stanley's 9 October target cut to $35.50 from $43 and an unresolved $573 million bridge loan maturing 31 December 2026 with no takeout financing announced; the stock is about 52% off its $30.32 high. Venture Global rose 1.6% on frame agreements with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes Energy Services for up to 16 new 720MW power island units, supporting more than 10GW of off-grid "Island-Mode" capacity for adjacent data centres. Zacks upgraded it to Buy on 14 October after a 20%-plus rise in consensus estimates over three months, with Goldman at Buy and RBC at Outperform, against a Form 144 on 14 October signalling a proposed insider sale.

Tata Communications results

Tata Communications reported Q2 FY2027 revenue up 9.6% year on year to INR 6,688 crore, EBITDA up 21.2% to INR 1,422 crore and profit after tax up 86% to INR 341 crore, with free cash flow positive at INR 212 crore and a second straight quarter of double-digit order book growth. CEO Ganesh Subramanian, six months into the job, said the digital portfolio's EBITDA margin improved to negative 3.6% from negative 6.9%, roughly halving losses, and described AI-led wins including Tata Consumer. The stock was unchanged at $6.62 in the data cited.

The rest of the feed

The remaining 180-odd items are headline-only and mostly routine. There is a thick layer of broker notes: KeyBanc downgrading Cirrus Logic after an Asia trip, Mizuho cutting CNX Resources on a weaker gas outlook, Rosenblatt cutting IonQ on dilution, StoneX cutting Spotify to Hold on margin and label costs with IndeRes also downgrading it on valuation, BofA upgrading CarMax, Baird upgrading Zions and raising Bloom Energy, RBC starting Kuehne + Nagel at Sector Perform, and a long run of H.C. Wainwright reiterations across biotech. Deal headlines include Labcorp buying BioReference Health assets for $722 million, CCC Intelligent Solutions agreeing a $6.1 billion buyout, and AtlasClear acquiring Dawson James for up to $24.5 million. CoreWeave appears twice, with shares and bonds sliding further on AI debt fears and then a Delta One post saying the bonds rebounded, the October 2031s up 3.3 cents to 82.8. Energy and geopolitics headlines cover US unhappiness with the IEA emergency oil release and a suggested extra 100 million barrels, Saudi Aramco offering more spot cargoes into Europe, an Iranian warning on Hormuz crossings, and Russian oil and gas revenue seen up 10% year on year to $12 billion in October. A large share of the list is TradingView chart posts on gold, Bitcoin and FX pairs, including one long gold piece from a retail author sitting at $4,157 and watching the PPI and retail sales release; these are individual traders' views, not news. The Amazon Form 4 item has no content beyond the filing title.
