Risk appetite rolling over

The loudest macro item today is Goldman Sachs saying its risk-appetite indicator has turned negative for the first time since April, its lowest reading since the early stages of the Iran war. The note, relayed via Walter Bloomberg, describes investors selling AI stocks and rotating into US Treasuries despite hotter-than-expected inflation. It cites South Korea's Kospi down 4% and AI startup Elice falling over 30% on its trading debut. Worth holding alongside the fact that the Investing.com market snapshot from this morning showed the Nasdaq up 1.11% and the S&P up 0.41%, so the de-risking is not uniform across sessions.

Oil at five-month highs feeding the inflation story

Brent traded as high as $111.05, a fresh five-month high, with Investing.com attributing it to attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure and continued disruption risk in the Middle East. This is the thread running through nearly everything else in the section. September US CPI rose 3.7% year-on-year and core 2.6%, both slightly above forecasts, with gasoline up 9.1% on the month accounting for more than half the headline monthly increase. White House adviser Kevin Hassett said inflation is "back needing some work" after several months of improvement, citing a 0.6% monthly CPI print and 0.3% core, per a headline-only item.

Fed pricing ahead of October 27-28

The rate picture is being argued over in the material rather than settled. Investing.com's FedWatch read has an 18% probability of a hike at next week's meeting and 75% for December. One TradingView piece citing CME FedWatch puts December at 94%, so the figures circulating differ. A headline-only item says Bank of America still forecasts an October 28 hike despite roughly 20% market pricing, warning persistent inflation and strong activity could push core PCE toward 3.4%. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has stressed financial conditions are not yet restrictive enough, per a TradingView macro write-up. Other headline-only items include Goolsbee speaking and Citi arguing rates may matter more for the economy than stock valuations.

Gold under pressure for a third session

Gold is trading around 4,112 to 4,121 after repeatedly failing to reclaim 4,200, and multiple full-read technical pieces describe the same setup: a break below the 4,140 to 4,150 area, price now testing a 4,110 to 4,123 demand zone, with 4,085 to 4,095 and the 4,074 low as the next reference points below. The stated drivers are consistent across them, which is the useful part: firm Treasury yields above 5%, a supported dollar, higher oil reviving inflation concerns, and December hike pricing. One summary noted the dollar also drew safe-haven flows Monday on civil unrest in Europe.

France, yields and the dollar

A headline-only item reports French 10-year yields jumping 10 basis points toward 5%, described as a two-decade high, with the OAT-Bund spread widening to 145 basis points, the euro down 0.3% and French bank stocks lower, tied to political unrest. Today's French bill auctions were mixed: 6-month at 3.045% versus 2.964% prior and 12-month at 3.292% versus 3.255%, while the 3-month actually eased to 2.750% from 2.761%. US bills also nudged up, the 3-month at 4.095% from 4.085% and the 6-month at 4.220% from 4.200%. A separate headline has the dollar gaining on euro weakness and higher crude; one morning summary put DXY at 101.78, and the Investing.com snapshot had it at 101.545, down 0.24%.

Canada inflation up but core cooling

Canadian annual inflation rose to 3.1% in September, below the 3.2% forecast, with higher oil pushing energy costs up, per the DeItaone summary. Monthly CPI came in at 0.1% against 0.2% expected. The Bank of Canada's preferred core measures eased across the board: trimmed 1.8% versus 1.9% expected, median 1.9% versus 2.0%, common 2.4% versus 2.6%, and core CPI 2.2% from 2.4%. Headline-only items note the TSX slipping on the inflation print and an OilPrice piece highlighting fuel oil up 58%.

Crypto and the risk-sensitive tail

Bitcoin slipped below $82,000, trading near $81,511 and down about 1.5% on the day, after failing to hold above $83,000 the prior session and having retreated from above $85,000 earlier this month. Investing.com ties the move directly to elevated oil, geopolitical tension and the Fed outlook. Altcoins followed: Ethereum down 2.2% to $2,385.92, XRP down 1.4% to $1.2953, Cardano down 2%, Solana down 1.2% and Dogecoin down 0.8%.

US data today and the rest of the calendar

Ahead of the open, the NAHB Housing Market Index already came in at 29 against 31 consensus and 32 prior. A TradeNation preview lists the rest of the session: Philadelphia Fed non-manufacturing, building permits, housing starts and pending home sales in the US, UK wage growth and unemployment, German PPI and eurozone ZEW, with ECB's Lane and BoE's Greene scheduled to speak. One morning summary reports German PPI already up 1.9% month-on-month and UK unemployment at 4.7%. China's one- and five-year Loan Prime Rates are expected unchanged at 3.00% and 3.50%. Earnings in focus include Netflix, GE, RTX, GM, 3M, United Airlines and Halliburton.

Headline-only odds and ends

Several items are single lines with no detail behind them: UBS has added a March hike to its ECB forecast, the Bank of Japan may raise its inflation forecast while holding rates according to sources, the IMF says the BoJ may need to tighten faster if inflation beats forecast, Governor Ueda says underlying inflation is "quite close" to 2%, the Bank of England is reported to be probing Barclays over private credit loans, and Jamie Dimon says the US economy is booming on strong profits, low unemployment and AI infrastructure spending. The large remaining block is retail TradingView chart commentary on gold, GBPUSD, EURJPY and Bitcoin, plus several Trump Truth Social posts on inflation and the midterms, none carrying new data.
