Brief

The inflation re-acceleration story is the backdrop

The dominant theme across today's macro feed is that US inflation has turned back up and the hiking debate is live again. White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said inflation "looks like it's back needing some work," pointing to September CPI at +0.6% month-over-month with core at +0.3%, after several months of improvement. Bank of America is sticking with a call for a Fed hike on October 28 even though markets price roughly a 20% chance, arguing persistent inflation and strong activity could push core PCE toward 3.4%. Pulling the other way, a separate headline has gold rising as remarks from Warsh curbed hike bets, and another piece frames an October pause with a December hike still on the table. Goolsbee is on the calendar to speak. Jamie Dimon, by contrast, called the US economy booming on strong corporate profits, low unemployment and AI infrastructure spending, and suggested AI may eventually be deflationary. Citi published a note arguing rates may matter more for the economy than stock valuations, and there's a Fed piece on the AI boom adding to the inflation headache. None of this is settled either way in the material.

Canada CPI up but core cooling

Canadian annual inflation rose to 3.1% in September, just under the 3.2% forecast, with energy the driver and one outlet flagging fuel oil prices up 58%. Monthly CPI came in at 0.1% against 0.2% expected. The Bank of Canada's preferred cores actually eased: trimmed 1.8% versus 1.9% expected, median 1.9% versus 2.0%, common 2.4% versus 2.6%, core CPI 2.2% from 2.4%. The TSX slipped as the headline number revived rate concerns and oil retreated. Separately, Macklem is reported to see a sharply higher inflation outlook as oil surges. Canadian housing starts beat at 248.9K versus 234.0K expected, while foreign securities purchases swung to -17.31B against an expected 23.59B.

France yields and European central bank speakers

French 10-year yields jumped 10 basis points toward 5%, described as a two-decade high, with the OAT-Bund spread widening to 145 basis points, the euro down 0.3% and French bank stocks lower, attributed to violent protests and political uncertainty. The French bill auctions show the same drift: 6-month BTF at 3.045% from 2.964% and 12-month at 3.292% from 3.255%, with the 3-month roughly flat at 2.750%. Lagarde said the bond selloff will itself slow inflation. UBS has added a March rate hike to its ECB forecast. Lane, Elderson, Lagarde and Nagel are all on the speaking calendar, alongside the Bundesbank monthly report.

US data prints ran hot

Industrial production came in at 0.7% against 0.4% expected and 0.1% prior, with capacity utilisation at 76.9% versus 76.5% and manufacturing production matching at 0.3%. Trade prices were well above consensus: import prices 1.1% versus 0.9%, export prices 2.2% versus 1.0%. TIC net long-term flows were 279.2B against a 75.2B consensus and -27.9B prior, with foreign buying of T-bonds at 108.9B. The federal budget balance was -27.0B, narrower than the -34.7B expected. NAHB housing market index is pencilled at 31 against 32 prior. Bill auctions sit at 4.085% (3-month) and 4.200% (6-month) on the prior prints.

China data batch, no actuals in the material

A large block of Chinese releases is on the calendar, but the pages I read were empty Nasdaq calendar shells with no actual figures, so only the consensus and prior numbers are available: GDP 4.4% expected against 4.3% prior, industrial production 5.4% versus 5.2%, retail sales 0.5% versus 0.4%, fixed asset investment -7.3% versus -7.2%, unemployment steady at 5.3%, house prices -3.0% prior, and both loan prime rates expected unchanged at 3.00% and 3.50%. The NBS press conference is also listed. The same applies to the ECB Lane and RBA Kent entries, which were calendar placeholders with no content behind them.

Gold consolidating, not broken, per Metals Focus

Kitco carried a Metals Focus view that gold's path to $6,000 and silver's return above $90 hinge on renewed investor confidence. Gold has been struggling as persistent inflation and rising rates push money toward higher-yielding assets, but the analyst's position is that the market is consolidating rather than entering a bear market, with the structural drivers behind last year's rally still intact. Other Kitco headlines fit around that: gold and silver pressured by hot CPI and PPI prints while gold ETF holdings rose to 2026 highs per Heraeus, gold slightly lower and silver higher Monday morning on falling oil and lower Treasury yields with Fed-pause expectations holding, and Wall Street undecided on direction after gold hit a $4,200 ceiling. CFTC gold net longs eased slightly to 207.9K from 210.3K, silver to 22.6K from 23.2K.

Japan, and the rest of Asia-Pacific

BOJ Governor Ueda said underlying inflation is "quite close" to the 2% target, and the IMF said the BOJ may need to tighten faster if inflation beats forecasts. Japan's tertiary industry activity index fell to -4.10 from 0.70. New Zealand's trade balance came in far worse than expected at -1,971M against -775M consensus and -1,536M prior, with imports rising to 8.44B from 8.02B while exports were flat at 6.47B. The NZ services index slipped to 50.9 from 51.0.

Positioning and other odds and ends

The CFTC data shows speculative shorts deepening across most dollar crosses: EUR -137.6K from -99.3K, GBP -107.0K from -97.6K, AUD -117.3K from -98.6K, NZD -47.0K from -29.3K, CAD -94.8K from -90.2K. S&P 500 shorts were trimmed to -141.0K from -154.1K while Nasdaq 100 longs fell to 48.5K from 58.1K. In the UK, the Rightmove house price index rose 1.0% from 0.7%, and the FT reports the Bank of England is probing Barclays over its handling of private credit risks. Brazil's IGP-10 came in at 1.8% against 1.4% expected, IBC-Br activity at 0.30% in line. South Africa business confidence jumped to 135.1 from 125.4. There's also an analysis piece on global food inflation intensifying as supply shocks accumulate, and a Kitco item on US consumers facing the highest financial stress since COVID on debt and borrowing costs.

Noise in the list

A large share of the remaining 200 items are TradingView chart posts, most of them gold setups at the $4,130-$4,240 levels, plus bitcoin, DXY and FX ideas. These are individual trader opinions, not news, and I haven't read them. A Federal Reserve tweet in the list is just a promotion for an education webinar on October 20.
