Pre-open tape and the risk rebound

The fullest picture of this morning comes from the hi2morrow research note on TradingView. Nasdaq futures are up more than 1%, with QQQ quoted +1.33% and SPY +0.52% in pre-market, as chip and AI names rebound from last week's selloff. The iShares Semiconductor ETF fell 11.8% last week, its worst week since March, and the bounce is broad: LRCX, AMAT, KLAC, AMD, AVGO, TSM and NVDA, plus the AI hardware, optical and power complex (LITE, COHR, CIEN, ANET, SMCI, DELL, VRT). Memory names are higher on a Barron's report that China's CXMT forecasts a revenue boom, and the neocloud and AI data-center group (IREN, APLD, WULF, NBIS, CRWV) is recovering. Analyst moves in the mix: JPMorgan upgraded Intel to neutral from underweight with an $85 target, Bernstein upgraded Datadog with a $350 target, Truist reiterated buy on NBIS at $355 and on CRWV. Nearly 15% of the S&P 500 reports this week, including Tesla and Meta. The Fed is in blackout before the October 27-28 FOMC, and the only US datapoint scheduled is the NAHB Housing Market Index at 10:00.

Oil sanctions reversal and crude lower

The single biggest macro item is Trump's Friday executive order suspending numerous Russia sanctions days before they were due to take effect, and waiving proposed tariffs on buyers of Russian oil. Brent fell 1.1% to about $108.70 and WTI 0.7% to roughly $98.30. Oil majors and refiners are lower with crude: XOM, BP, SHEL, EQNR, PSX, VLO. Both gold notes read in full pick up the same thread from the other side, arguing lower oil eases near-term inflation pressure ahead of the Fed meeting.

Rates backdrop and hike expectations

This is a tightening cycle, not an easing one. The 10-year Treasury yield is around 5.09% and the 30-year around 5.42%, both a basis point lower, with JPMorgan quoted as saying that if bond yields are stabilizing, that will help equities. Audrey Quinn's gold note puts the market-implied chance of an October hike at about 15%, with December expectations much higher. Headlines around that agree in direction without detail: Investing.com reports gold rising as remarks from Fed Chair Warsh curbed hike bets, an earlier Fed market review says hot inflation data raised October hike odds, and a TradingView piece is titled on a pause in October with December still live. UBS has added a March hike to its ECB forecast, per Investing.com, and Lagarde is reported saying the bond selloff will itself slow inflation. A Polymarket line shows "12 or more Fed rate cuts in 2026" settled at No, 100%.

Gold near $4,170 with $4,175 the pivot

Two gold pieces were read in full and they agree on the setup. Spot gold was around $4,173 on October 19 in Quinn's note and roughly $4,165 in SroshMayi's, both flagging 4,174-4,176 as the pivot the price is sitting under, with support noted at 4,154-4,158 and then 4,130-4,147, and resistance at 4,185-4,196 above. Both are short-term bearish views from the authors while describing the larger structure as still rising, and both cite lower oil and softer Treasury yields as the supportive macro side. The research note separately has gold +0.3% at about $4,195, silver +1.0% and Bitcoin +0.8% at roughly $82,300. There is a very large tail of headline-only gold chart posts in this section that add nothing beyond those levels. CFTC positioning shows gold specs at 207.9K from 210.3K and silver at 22.6K from 23.2K, both marginally lighter.

China data beat

China's Q3 GDP came in at +4.5% year on year against 4.4% expected, and the monthly trade surplus hit a record $133.5bn, per CNBC via the research note. The Nasdaq calendar entries for China GDP, industrial production, retail sales, fixed asset investment, unemployment and house prices were all boilerplate pages with no data in the body, so the only numbers there are the consensus and previous figures in the lines themselves: GDP consensus 4.4% versus 4.3% prior, industrial production 5.4% versus 5.2%, retail sales 0.5% versus 0.4%, fixed asset investment -7.3% versus -7.2%, unemployment 5.3% unchanged, house prices previously -3.0%.

Europe soft, France the problem

Europe is lower, with the Stoxx 600 down 0.55% and the CAC 40 down 1.2% as protests in France turn violent. A Deltaone post says French 10-year yields jumped 10 basis points toward 5%, a two-decade high, with the OAT-Bund spread widening to 145 basis points, the euro down 0.3% and French bank stocks lower. On the data side, euro zone CPI printed 3.8% in line with consensus and up from 3.2%, core CPI 2.5% in line, HICP ex energy and food 2.2%, and the trade balance swung to -16.1B from +10.7B. Italian HICP came in hot at 4.2% against 4.1% expected and 3.2% prior, and the Italian trade balance at 1.773B badly missed a 7.500B consensus.

US data already out and other reads

Friday's US releases ran warm. Industrial production rose 0.7% against 0.4% expected, capacity utilization 76.9% versus 76.5%, manufacturing production 0.3% in line. Import prices rose 1.1% against 0.9% expected and export prices 2.2% against 1.0%. TIC net long-term flows came in at 279.2B against a 75.2B consensus, after -27.9B. The federal budget balance was -27.0B, better than the -34.7B consensus. Baker Hughes total rigs were flat at 603, oil rigs down three to 459. OPEC production lines show Saudi output up to 8.20M barrels from 7.00M and Iraq at 4.10M from 3.20M, with Kuwait and Libya lower.

Banks, credit and other single items

Barclays is lower on an FT report, carried as several Investing.com headlines, that the Bank of England's PRA is examining a complaint over how Barclays classified total return swaps linked to private credit loans. Indonesia is the other stress point: TLK extends losses as Indonesian stocks fall more than 5% to a six-year low on MSCI downgrade fears, with Goldman estimating roughly $5.6bn of passive outflows if Indonesia is removed from MSCI EM indexes. On earnings in the macro note, Cleveland-Cliffs posted Q3 adjusted EBITDA of $612M against $575M guidance and expects 2027 to be a good year helped by tariffs; Fifth Third reported adjusted EPS of $1.13 and reported EPS of $0.90 as it integrates Comerica; HDFC Bank Q2 profit rose 5% and ICICI beat on loan growth, though all three of HDB, IBN and FITB gapped down.

Headline-only commentary worth noting

Several items are headlines only and state their point without elaboration: Jamie Dimon saying the US economy is booming on strong corporate profits, low unemployment and AI infrastructure spending, and that AI could eventually be deflationary; Citi saying interest rates may matter more for the economy than stock valuations; BOJ Governor Ueda saying underlying inflation is quite close to 2%, with the IMF separately saying the BOJ may need to tighten faster if inflation beats forecast; Bank of Canada's Macklem citing a sharply higher inflation outlook as oil surges; and an Investing.com analysis expecting global food inflation to intensify as supply shocks accumulate. Beyond those, the bulk of the remaining 200 items are repetitive chart posts and calendar stubs with nothing new in them.
