Fed path repriced toward an October hold

The biggest move in the macro backdrop is the collapse in odds of an October hike. A full-text piece lays out the sequence: the Fed raised by 25bp in September to a 3.75%–4.00% target range, its first hike in over three years, and markets initially expected a follow-up in October. New York Fed President John Williams said there was no urgency to move again immediately, which cut October odds to 44%. Then Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking alongside IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva in Bangkok, declined to signal anything, saying "I don't believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year." That pushed hold odds to roughly 85%, with hike odds near 15%. The article also notes the October 27–28 meeting falls days before the November 3 midterms, which may argue for waiting. December is a different story: markets price an 89% chance of a 25bp hike that would take the range to 4.00%–4.25%, with September CPI at 3.7% (up from 3.4%) and oil above $106 cited as the reasons. A headline-only item from DeItaone puts the swing more sharply still, saying hike odds crashed from 55% to 13% and Kalshi hold odds went from 50% to 86%. Nick Timiraos, headline-only, notes five Fed officials hit the "no urgency" line over two weeks and quotes Warsh saying of market-guiding hints, "We're not in that business."

Inflation data running hot

The data flow leans the other way from the dovish repricing. Import prices rose 1.1% in September against 0.9% consensus, export prices 2.2% against 1.0%, with import prices up 8.1% year on year per the headline-only DeItaone summary. Industrial production rose 0.7% versus 0.4% expected, manufacturing +0.3% in line, utilities +3.5%, mining +0.2%, and capacity utilization 76.9% against 76.5% forecast. The federal budget balance came in at -27.0B against -34.7B consensus and -167.0B prior. Atlanta Fed GDPNow sits at 3.6%, unchanged. A headline-only Investing.com item says the NY Fed service sector survey found notable price pressures.

Tech-led selloff and Citi on rates versus valuations

Citi argues interest rates now matter more for growth expectations than for equity valuations, because AI fundamentals and changes in share ownership have weakened the old stock-bond allocation link. Its fair value model, built off the 10-year Treasury yield with macro adjustments, puts S&P 500 fair value at 17.1 to 22.1 times earnings; the index trades at 22.4 times, which Citi reads as stretched sentiment and complacent positioning. Cyclicals and defensives have fallen since late August on rate sensitivity while growth names held up on AI earnings expectations. Citi also suggests the rise in yields may reflect expected government debt issuance rather than an overheating economy, and that the pension shift from defined-benefit to defined-contribution, target-date funds, and foreign buying all keep money in equities. Its open question is who supplies the next wave of equity demand. The quote board inside that piece showed the S&P 500 down 1.09%, Nasdaq down 2.14%, VIX up 21.45% to 19.99, the 10-year at 5.098% and the 30-year at 5.437%, with defence and energy names leading gainers and AI-adjacent names like NBIS, CRWV and SMCI down 9% to 12%. Headline-only pieces alongside it flag the SOX chip index posting its longest losing streak since 2008 and the Nasdaq's worst week since late June at -4.5%. Separately, headline-only, BofA's Michael Hartnett expects investors to cut risk over the next three to four weeks, citing 3% real yields, inflation, AI valuations and midterm uncertainty.

Gold stalls at $4,200, dollar softer

Kitco reports spot gold near steady and silver lower late Friday, with gold around $4,167.90, down $1.90 or 0.05%, and silver near $56.85, down $0.45 or 0.78%. Sharply higher crude and a modest rebound in Treasury yields offset a weaker dollar and safe-haven demand, and gold failed to hold its push toward $4,200 as the tech selloff deepened. A second Kitco item says gold recovered late in the week after being hit by hotter-than-expected CPI, rising yields and a firmer dollar, helped by falling yields and reduced October hike expectations; its survey has Wall Street undecided and Main Street leaning bearish after the $4,200 ceiling. A TradingView read on the dollar index describes DXY pulling back from weekly highs near 103.00 to the 101.60–101.80 zone, citing fading rate hike bets and lower yields, while still calling the broader trend higher. Headline-only items point the same way: dollar weakness on reduced Fed hike chances, sterling at a three-week high, and GBP/USD rising on BoE hike bets.

Capital flows and CFTC positioning

TIC net long-term transactions came in at 279.2B against 75.2B consensus and -27.9B prior, a very large swing. Overall net capital flow was 199.8B versus 87.4B prior, and foreign buying of T-bonds was 108.9B against -3.6B. The calendar pages themselves carried no commentary, so there is no stated explanation attached. In CFTC positioning, short bets against the euro deepened to -137.6K from -99.3K, AUD to -117.3K from -98.6K, GBP to -107.0K from -97.6K, CAD to -94.8K from -90.2K and NZD to -47.0K from -29.3K, while yen longs trimmed to 50.2K from 62.3K. On the index side, S&P 500 net shorts narrowed slightly to -141.0K from -154.1K and Nasdaq 100 net longs fell to 48.5K from 58.1K. Gold longs eased to 207.9K, silver to 22.6K, crude edged up to 100.3K, and corn longs dropped hard to 358.4K from 452.5K.

Oil, energy inventories and OPEC output

Crude inventories drew 8.557M against an expected 0.200M build, with distillates down 2.527M and gasoline up 3.518M against an expected draw. Cushing built 1.862M. The Baker Hughes total rig count held at 603, oil rigs slipped to 459 from 462. OPEC production figures show Saudi Arabia at 8.20M barrels from 7.00M and Iraq at 4.10M from 3.20M, with Kuwait, Libya and Iran lower. The Citi article's quote board had WTI up 3.95% at 101.84.

Europe, Japan and Canada

Euro zone CPI rose to 3.8% from 3.2%, matching consensus, with core at 2.5% and HICP ex energy and food at 2.2%, both in line. Italian HICP jumped to 4.2% against 4.1% expected from 3.2%. The euro zone trade balance swung to -16.1B from +10.7B. Headline-only items say the IMF expects at least one more 25bp ECB hike in 2026, and ECB President Lagarde said the bond selloff will slow inflation. On Japan, headline-only reporting has BOJ Governor Ueda reaffirming further hikes as underlying inflation nears 2%, with the IMF saying the BOJ may need to tighten faster if inflation beats forecast. In Canada, headline-only, BoC Governor Macklem sees a sharply higher inflation outlook as oil surges, housing starts came in at 248.9K against 234.0K expected, and foreign securities purchases missed badly at -17.31B versus 23.59B consensus. CIBC warned on inflation risk from a weaker loonie.

Scheduled speakers

Goolsbee, Warsh, Macklem and Bundesbank's Nagel all have calendar entries, alongside the IMF meetings. The calendar pages carry no detail beyond the listings.
