Hammack wants more tightening, fast

The loudest macro voice today was Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, who told a National Association for Business Economics conference that the Fed should move "relatively quickly" to a restrictive stance. Her argument: inflation pressure is broad-based rather than concentrated in energy, her staff puts underlying inflation in the mid-to-high 2% range, and firms in her district are telling her they plan to raise prices faster than their input costs are rising. She also flagged demand-side pressure from the AI buildout lifting prices on computer, electronic and high-tech components, which feeds through to data centres and to aviation, power generation and construction projects using the same parts. Her preference is smaller, more frequent moves rather than waiting and risking a larger correction later. In separate comments she said she is hearing "early warning signs" of a problem with inflation expectations, that current policy is not restrictive enough, and that higher rates won't dissuade hyperscalers but might influence firms in other industries. On yields, she said the 10-year now matches 1990s levels and called current rates "modest" by historical standards, adding that a return to 3% mortgages would itself signal economic trouble; mortgages are above 7%. She noted low-income households have moved from trading down to juggling which bills to pay. Hammack dissented in favour of a hike in July, and colleagues including Chair Warsh joined her in voting to hike in September. Investors expect the 3.75%–4.00% range to hold at the October 27-28 meeting. Headline-only items show St. Louis's Musalem making a similar call for more hikes.

The week is built around Wednesday's CPI

Investing.com's preview lays out the calendar. September CPI lands Wednesday 8:30 ET, with the consensus at 0.6% m/m and 3.6% y/y against 0.4% and 3.4% prior, while core is seen cooling to 0.2% m/m from 0.3% with core y/y at 2.5%. That split, hot headline and softer core, usually points to energy or other volatile components. The piece notes a hot core would likely kill rate-cut hopes and lift yields and the dollar, a soft core would do the opposite, and hot headline with tame core could produce little reaction. Beige Book follows at 2pm Wednesday, Bowman speaks twice. Thursday brings retail sales (0.3% m/m forecast after August's 1.2%), PPI at 0.5% and core PPI 0.3%, jobless claims around 195K, Philly Fed easing to 26.5 from 37.8 and Empire to 3.2 from 7.6. Chair Warsh speaks Thursday at 11:30pm ET, after the data. Atlanta Fed GDPNow sits at 3.6% for Q3. Friday has industrial production at 0.4% and import prices at 0.6%. Tuesday carries existing home sales, NFIB and the OPEC monthly report; the MBA 30-year mortgage rate was last 7.49%. Positioning matters here: CFTC data shows S&P 500 speculators net short 154.1K, worse than the prior 142.5K, so the reaction function cuts both ways.

Goldman goes overweight stocks and bonds

Goldman Sachs upgraded equities to overweight on a three-month view and bonds to overweight on twelve months, pointing to strong earnings and limited recession risk. The bank looks for close to 30% year-over-year S&P 500 earnings growth in Q3, says recent declines have improved valuations, and notes Treasury yields at their highest since 2002 make longer-dated bonds more attractive. Its stated supports are easing inflation, peaking energy prices and a more dovish Fed, which is a direct contradiction of what Hammack said hours later. A separate headline-only item repeats the call with the added detail that Goldman favours AI exposure into 2027.

Gold stuck under $4,200 into the print

OilPrice has gold around $4,150–$4,200, with December futures near $4,189, down roughly 5% since early September. The pressure it cites is a dollar index near 18-month highs, 10-year yields above 5%, and expectations of further Fed tightening, a bad combination for an asset with no yield. Against that, central banks and ETFs keep buying: global gold ETF holdings hit a record 4,256 tonnes in September, and UBS sees room for a recovery if rate-hike fears ease. Several TradingView technical pieces circle the same level, all framing $4,200 as the line and CPI as the trigger. One sets a working range of 4,148 to 4,250 and treats a loss of 4,148 as killing the bullish structure; another is neutral-to-bearish below 4,200–4,220 with 4,150 as the downside trigger. These are retail chart notes, not research, and they disagree on direction. CFTC gold specs eased to 210.3K from 218.6K.

Tape and the dollar

The quote tables inside the Investing.com pieces show a split session: Dow around +0.37%, S&P 500 roughly flat at -0.05%, Nasdaq -0.41%, VIX up about 2.6% to 15.2. The 10-year yield was near 5.24, the dollar index near 102.37, WTI around $93 and Brent near $106. On FX, a TradingView piece has EURUSD near 1.1161 with RSI at 29.4, arguing France's debt burden and uncertainty over parliamentary approval of planned 2027 budget cuts are weighing on the euro while US resilience supports the dollar. Headline-only items add a Commerzbank warning that French debt could pose larger systemic risk than Greece did, and a note that French fiscal risk raises the chance of an ECB pause after December. CFTC positioning shows euro shorts deepening to -99.3K from -63.3K, with Aussie and Canadian dollar shorts also growing.

Softer data underneath the inflation story

Several headline-only calendar items cut against the strong-economy framing. University of Michigan sentiment came in at 46.3 against 47.5 consensus and 48.1 prior, with current conditions collapsing to 44.7 versus 50.5 expected, while 1-year inflation expectations were 4.7% and the 5-year 3.5%, both above the prior readings. Canada lost 68,300 jobs in September against expectations of a small gain, with unemployment up to 6.5%, and a related headline says the Canadian dollar slid as rate-hike bets retreated. Abroad, India's CPI jumped to 5.54% and Brazil's to 4.58%, both described in the headlines as strengthening the case for tighter policy. US initial claims were 197K, still low. The last 30-year auction cleared at 5.618% against 5.308% prior.

Fed independence and odds and ends

Headline-only items note Trump has created a committee to examine the mortgage fraud allegations against Fed Governor Lisa Cook, with an in-person White House hearing scheduled for November 5 that Cook is directed to attend. BofA's Hartnett is cited saying money market funds took in $166.4B last week, the largest inflow since April 2020, and that sustained Fed cuts are needed to move that cash. A BoE Bailey speaking item on the calendar carries a bracketed +0.9%. The rest of the list is largely repeated TradingView chart posts on gold, EURUSD and the indices, plus routine calendar prints, and has nothing further in it.
