Columbus Day session, CPI and banks ahead

US futures are close to flat into the open on Columbus Day, with the cash bond market closed, which the TradingView desk note flags as a reason for thin early-week liquidity. Friday's close had the Dow up 423.31 points or 0.83% to 51,654.95, the S&P 500 up 0.59% to 7,811.54 and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.64% to 27,366.17, a tech-led rebound after a volatile week of high yields, high oil and a wobble in the AI trade. The two events that matter this week are September CPI on Wednesday, with a Reuters poll looking for 3.7% headline against 3.4% in August and 2.5% core, and the start of Q3 earnings. JPMorgan, Goldman, Citi and Wells Fargo report Tuesday, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America Wednesday, with Johnson & Johnson, UnitedHealth and BlackRock also due. LSEG data has S&P 500 Q3 earnings expected up more than 30%. PPI and retail sales follow Thursday. Fed's Hammack speaks at 12:50.

Rates backdrop: a hiking Fed, 5.25% tens

This is a tightening cycle, not an easing one. The Fed hiked last month for the first time since 2023, the 10-year was around 5.24% late Friday after recently touching a 24-year high, and the 30-year auction cleared at 5.618% versus 5.308% prior. The next meeting is October 27-28. Traders have scaled back October hike bets, with the various gold write-ups citing roughly 17-19% priced for October and around 85-86% for at least one hike by December. UBS economists said September CPI "will test whether inflation gives the Committee room to wait," noted the minutes showed a downside surprise on core PCE, and said they still expect one more hike with risk of another, but added "this doesn't seem like a Committee in a rush." Headline-only items carry Fed's Musalem saying more hikes are needed to get to 2%, and Waller commenting on the role of verbal forward guidance.

Oil above $100 keeps the inflation problem alive

Brent is up 1.4% to about $106.3 and WTI up 1.5% to roughly $93.1, with Brent holding above $100 through the US-Iran war. Friday's action went the other way briefly when Trump said Putin agreed to supply diesel to the US and global markets, which knocked prices back modestly. Headline-only pieces point to attacks on Saudi Arabia offsetting that Russian supply announcement. Copper is up around 1.1-1.2%.

Gold stuck under $4,200

Gold is soft, down about 0.5% to roughly $4,195 on the futures and trading near 4,171-4,186 spot across the several technical posts. The common thread in all of them is the same macro: a dollar near an 18-month high, elevated Treasury yields, and traders unwilling to commit ahead of Wednesday's CPI. One write-up notes gold has fallen about 20% since the US-Iran war began, with support from ETF buying and China's central bank. The cluster of TradingView gold pieces is split on direction and these are retail chart opinions, not research, so the useful content is the shared macro framing rather than the levels.

Goldman turns overweight equities and bonds

Goldman Sachs upgraded equities to overweight on a three-month view and bonds to overweight on twelve months, citing improving valuations, resilient earnings and easing inflation into 2027. The bank favours AI-linked names and selective dividend plays while warning that rising yields and geopolitics keep volatility high. That sits alongside a mixed set of sell-side views: JPMorgan says investors are constructive on earnings but worried results underwhelm, and believes earnings will support the market. Evercore ISI points out XLF has been pushed down to its 200-day moving average ahead of the bank prints. RBC Capital Markets is the dissenting voice, still expecting a 5-10% S&P 500 pullback in coming weeks or months as overdue, with a 14-20% growth-scare drawdown a risen but non-base-case risk.

Consumer and labour data came in soft

Friday's University of Michigan release was weak: sentiment 46.3 against 47.5-47.8 expected and 48.1 prior, with current conditions collapsing to 44.7 versus about 50.5 consensus and 50.9 prior. Inflation expectations moved the wrong way, 5-year at 3.5% from 3.4% and 1-year at 4.7% from 4.6%. Canada lost 68,300 jobs in September against expectations of a small gain, with unemployment up to 6.5% and both full- and part-time employment falling, which sent the Canadian dollar lower and pushed back rate hike bets there. US jobless claims remain low at 197K. Atlanta Fed GDPNow sits at 3.6%.

India CPI and the global hiking wave

India's September retail inflation jumped to 5.54% from 4.83%, above the 5.4% poll, the fourth month above the RBI's 4% target and close to the 6% ceiling. Food inflation drove it, accelerating to 7.74% from 5.97% on onion, ginger and garlic, with base effects adding to the move. Transport inflation rose to 5.01% and core to about 4.6% per ICRA. The RBI hiked 25bp to 5.5% last week, its first increase in nearly four years, and Governor Malhotra now sees headline averaging near 5.8% over three quarters. Economists at Oxford Economics, DBS, Kotak, HDFC, Emkay and others broadly expect another 50-75bp of hikes, with December the near-unanimous next step. The rupee is down about 7% against the dollar near record lows. Brazil's September CPI also came in hot at 4.58% against 4.50% expected.

Fed independence story and positioning

Headline-only items note Trump has created a commission to examine the mortgage fraud allegations against Fed Governor Lisa Cook, with an in-person White House hearing scheduled for November 5 that Cook is directed to attend. Separately, CFTC positioning showed speculators adding to short dollar-crosses: euro net short widened to -99.3K from -63.3K, Aussie to -98.6K from -63.2K, sterling to -97.6K, Canada to -90.2K, while yen longs grew to 62.3K. S&P 500 net shorts widened to -154.1K and Nasdaq 100 net longs rose to 58.1K. BofA's Hartnett is cited saying money market funds took in $166.4B last week, the biggest inflow since April 2020, and that without sustained Fed cuts the $8 trillion in cash stays put.

Europe and the rest

Commerzbank is quoted warning French debt problems could be a bigger systemic risk to the eurozone than Greece was, with eurozone public debt averaging 90% of GDP against 80% in 2009, and a separate headline says French fiscal risks raise the chance of an ECB pause after December. Italian industrial production fell 1.3% against flat expectations. The remaining items are mostly routine calendar prints and a large volume of retail chart posts on gold, EURUSD, SPY and bitcoin that add no new information beyond the CPI-risk framing already covered.
