Brief

Full-text reads returned no article content

One caveat before the substance. The twenty items read in full were all Nasdaq economic calendar pages, and every one of them came back as empty site boilerplate ("Data is currently not available") rather than data. So everything below rests on the figures carried in the item lines themselves and on headline-only material. Nothing here is a deep read, and I am not dressing it up as one.

Fed speakers lining up behind more hikes

The loudest thread of the day is three Fed officials all pointing the same way after this week's hold. Dallas Fed's Lorie Logan says the Fed needs at least two more rate hikes, and per Nick Timiraos she framed her support for this week's decision alongside that view, arguing that skipping a meeting does not change the policy destination and that making the destination clear helps the FOMC. St. Louis Fed's Alberto Musalem said additional firming "will be necessary, and soon," laying out two inflation scenarios with the more likely one being that inflation stays too high unless the Fed raises further. Richmond's Tom Barkin told SiriusXM the direction of travel is "pretty straightforward" and the open question is pace, pointing back to the gradual approach signalled in September. Kitco's reporting characterises Wednesday's decision as a hawkish pause with rates left unchanged. Daly is on the calendar to speak. Separately, Investing.com reports the White House hearing on Fed Governor Cook has been pushed to December, per Hassett.

Risk-off tape, gold and silver liquidated

Equities and metals both went down together. Investor's Business Daily reports the stock market dove with Intel cratering, with midterms and the jobs report ahead. Kitco's PM report has spot gold falling below $3,900 and silver tumbling sharply in late Friday trading, attributing it to a technology-led equity selloff that intensified liquidation pressure across the complex. Earlier Kitco items track the same slide in stages: gold dropping below $4,000 on Friday morning as renewed attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz lifted crude, gold slipping about 1% to the $4,020 to $4,030 range on October 29 after a stronger-than-expected US growth print, and TDS's Bart Melek describing gold as stuck while the Fed holds hawkish. A separate TradingView headline has silver futures down 5.6% on hot US growth-inflation data. Kitco also flags the paradox directly: falling yields and a weaker dollar have not stopped the gold selloff. Metals Focus, via Kitco, sees scope for further silver losses against gold as the physical market weakens. All of this is headline-only.

Yields fell even as the Fed talked hawkish

Treasuries rallied on the day's data. Per the Deltaone feed, the 10-year was last down 6.22 basis points at 4.927% and the 2-year down 7.05 at 4.586%. The 7-year auction stopped at 4.894%, down from 5.085% at the prior sale. Bills were little changed, with the 8-week at 4.020% against 4.015% and the 4-week at 3.910% against 3.945%. Headline-only, and none of these items explains the move.

US data: growth still firm, labour costs easing

Chicago PMI came in at 55.3 against 55.8 consensus and 58.8 prior. The Employment Cost Index was 0.8%, matching consensus and down from 0.9%, with the wages component at 0.70% from 0.90% and benefits at 0.90% from 1.00%. Atlanta Fed GDPNow printed 3.2%. Natural gas storage built 80B against 75B expected. Baker Hughes had the total rig count flat at 603 with oil rigs at 462 from 460. On the household side, a Deltaone item cites BLS data showing housing and food made up 46.9% of US household spending in 2025, a 15-year high, with housing alone at 33.9%, the highest share since 2010.

Europe: German inflation undershoots, France and Italy overshoot

Germany's preliminary October CPI slowed to 2.8% year over year against a 3.0% forecast, falling 0.2% month over month versus an expected 0.1% rise, with harmonized CPI also at 2.8% and the monthly HICP at -0.1%. State-level prints matched that softness, with Saxony and North Rhine Westphalia at -0.2% monthly. But the rest of the bloc ran the other way: French CPI 3.4% against 3.2% consensus, Italian HICP 1.2% against 0.5%, Italian CPI 0.9% against 0.1%, and Spanish HICP 4.9% with core CPI unchanged at 3.1%. Euro zone GDP beat at 0.4% versus 0.2% expected, with unemployment at 6.5% against a 6.4% consensus. France was the soft spot on activity, with GDP at -0.1% versus 0.1% expected and consumer spending down 0.5%. German GDP was 1.2% against 1.1% and unemployment held at 6.4%. Italian GDP flatlined at 0.0%. On the ECB side, Panetta says further hikes may be needed to stop inflation, Lane says AI investment is supporting euro zone growth, and both Lane and Lagarde are scheduled to speak. Polish inflation fell to 3.5% in October, below forecasts.

Other central banks

The BoJ decision was expected to hold at 1.25%, with an Outlook Report and press conference alongside. Tokyo CPI was expected at 3.3% against 2.7% prior, with Tokyo core at 2.6%. Japanese activity data was weak, housing starts at -2.7% against 2.7% expected and construction orders at -11.1%. Bank of America expects a Bank of England hike on Thursday. Goldman sees a Riksbank hike in November and Norges Bank on hold. All headline-only.

CFTC positioning through the week

The positioning data is the one place with real numbers. Yen net longs jumped to 101.6K from 69.9K, the biggest shift in the FX set, while euro shorts deepened to -143.9K from -134.5K and Swiss franc shorts went to -20.0K from -18.1K. Canadian dollar shorts were covered, to -66.4K from -74.7K, with sterling, Aussie, kiwi and real roughly unchanged. In commodities, gold longs were cut to 186.5K from 199.9K and crude longs to 74.3K from 89.3K. Corn longs dropped hard, to 201.3K from 286.7K, soybeans to 204.1K from 246.6K, and wheat shorts nearly doubled to -50.8K from -29.3K. Copper longs fell to 48.3K from 57.4K. Natural gas shorts grew to -255.2K. On index futures, S&P 500 shorts were trimmed slightly to -134.4K from -142.7K and Nasdaq 100 longs eased to 48.8K from 50.7K. Silver and aluminium were essentially flat.

Odds and ends

Goldman Sachs flagged interest rates and AI disruption as risks to long-term equity demand, carried as a headline on two Investing.com feeds with no detail beyond that. Scott Bessent posted about a San Francisco Fed paper attributing 20% of 2021-2024 rent growth to unauthorized immigration, and Trump posted on Truth Social that inflation is "way down" and incomes up. China's PMIs are pending, with manufacturing consensus 50.1 against 50.1 prior, non-manufacturing 50.5 against 50.2, and composite previously 50.7. The TradingView items in this list are retail chart setups on gold, EURUSD and SPX rather than news.
