Tape going into the open

The market snapshot carried on the Investing.com page read in full shows a heavy session: Nasdaq down 2.86%, S&P 500 down 1.82% to 7,579.86, Dow down 1.09%, and the VIX up 13.02% to 19.44. The damage was concentrated in semis and AI-linked names, with Intel down 28.58%, SanDisk down 13.42%, QCOM down 11.13%, AMD down 10.88% and Nvidia down 4.22%. A headline on the same page says the Nasdaq slid over 5% for its worst month since March 2025 as the AI trade suffered, and another cites Intel's weak outlook dragging global chip stocks. Treasuries rallied into that: the same snapshot has the 10-year at 4.921% and the 5-year at 4.722%, and a separate wire flash puts the 10-year down 6.22bp at 4.927% and the 2-year down 7.05bp at 4.586% after the US data.

Fed speakers all pointing the same way

This is a hiking cycle, not a cutting one, and three officials said so on the record. Dallas Fed's Lorie Logan said the Fed needs at least two more hikes and defended this week's hold on the grounds that skipping a meeting does not change the destination. St. Louis Fed's Alberto Musalem said additional firming "will be necessary, and soon," laying out two inflation scenarios and calling the one where inflation stays too high without further hikes the more likely. Richmond's Tom Barkin told SiriusXM the direction of travel is straightforward and the only real question is pace, pointing back to the gradual approach signalled in September. Daly is also down to speak on the calendar.

Cook hearing pushed to December

The White House has delayed its planned hearing into mortgage fraud allegations against Fed Governor Lisa Cook until December, per Kevin Hassett on Bloomberg TV, though Cook's lawyers would not confirm any agreed date. Hassett said the White House counsel has worked closely with Cook's people and that the president will decide next steps once the process puts the information on the table. Cook and her lawyer deny wrongdoing and have called the accusations a pretext to remove her because Trump wants rate cuts; her lawyer had previously said she would not be available until after the December 8-9 FOMC. The Supreme Court ruled in June that Trump cannot fire her at will but may be able to if she gets a chance to answer evidence of "cause." The original hearing date was November 5. Cook dissented this week in favour of a hike rather than the hold. Hassett, who sits on the three-person committee investigating her, said Chairman Warsh "has done a good job of allowing normal dissent and then driving a consensus." The article notes the Fed is widely expected to raise again in December.

US data was strong on growth, mixed on inflation

Q3 GDP came in at 3.4% against 3.2% consensus and 2.2% prior, with the GDP price index at 2.2% versus 3.2% expected. Headline PCE prices printed 2.1% against a 3.4% consensus and 5.0% prior, but core PCE prices at 2.50% ran above the 2.40% forecast, and the monthly core PCE index was 0.3% in line. Personal income rose 0.2% against 0.3% expected and spending 0.5% against 0.6%, with real personal consumption flat at 0.0% after 0.5%. Labour remains tight: initial claims 194K versus 198K expected, continuing claims 1,701K versus 1,720K. Atlanta Fed GDPNow sits at 3.2%. The Employment Cost Index, consensus 0.8% against 0.9% prior, and Chicago PMI, consensus 54.8 against 58.8 prior, are the items still outstanding on the calendar.

Gold and silver break down

Kitco's wire says spot gold and silver were sharply lower in early US trade Friday, with gold dropping below $4,000, as renewed attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz pushed crude higher. Gold futures on the Investing.com snapshot were at 3,885.00, down 0.36%, with silver at 49.138. Earlier Kitco commentary had gold slipping to $4,020–$4,030 on October 29, down about 1%, after the stronger US GDP print, and TDS's Bart Melek framed it as gold stuck after a hawkish Fed pause. Metals Focus is cited saying silver could lose further ground against gold as the physical market weakens. Crude itself: WTI at 102.92 and Brent at 112.30 on the snapshot, with a headline noting oil on track for a monthly gain as the US weighs military options against Iran.

Europe held, but the inflation picture is split

The ECB left rates unchanged, main rate 2.65%, deposit facility 2.50%, marginal lending 2.90%, all in line. Panetta said further hikes may be needed to stop inflation, and the ECB's own survey showed inflation expectations rising for 2026 and 2027. Lane said AI investment is supporting euro zone growth. The country data is uneven: German October CPI slowed to 2.8% year on year against a 3.0% forecast, falling 0.2% on the month versus expectations of a 0.1% rise, with HICP also 2.8%; Polish inflation fell to 3.5%, below forecasts; but French CPI climbed to 3.4%, Spain held at 4.9%, and Italy jumped to 5.4%. Euro zone sentiment softened, with the Business and Consumer Survey at 96.9 against 97.5 expected and consumer confidence at -17.9 from -16.5, while selling price expectations rose to 24.8 from 20.8.

Other central banks

Bank of America expects a Bank of England hike on Thursday; UK credit data came in soft across the board, with mortgage approvals 53.44K against 54.00K expected, net lending to individuals 5.800B versus 6.200B and consumer credit 1.914B versus 2.200B. Goldman sees a Riksbank hike in November and Norges Bank on hold. Headlines reference a BoC hike and a BoJ signalling more hikes, with dollar-yen lower on the latter.

Asia calendar, no actual data yet

The BoJ decision, outlook report and policy statement, plus the China PMIs and the Japanese inflation and labour prints, were all pulled as full articles but the underlying pages returned an empty Nasdaq calendar with no released figures. All I have is the scheduled consensus: BoJ expected to hold at 1.25%, Tokyo CPI consensus 3.3% against 2.7% prior with Tokyo core at 2.6% against 2.7%, Japan unemployment 2.5% unchanged, China manufacturing PMI 50.1 unchanged and non-manufacturing 50.5 against 50.2. South Korea industrial production was last at -4.8% and retail sales -1.8%.

Noise in the list

A large block of the section is CFTC speculative positioning lines with previous values only, routine bill and BTP auction results, and a long run of TradingView chart-setup posts on gold, EURUSD and the indices. None of it carries new information beyond what is above.
