Fed holds, data comes in hot

The backdrop going into the open is a hawkish one. The Fed left the funds target at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday in a 10-2 vote, with Governors Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissenting in favour of an immediate hike, and Chair Kevin Warsh gave no explicit guidance. Then Thursday's data made the hold look awkward: Q3 GDP grew 3.4% annualized against 3.2% expected, up from 2.2% in Q2, with personal consumption at 3.8% versus 3.4% expected and the GDP price index at 2.3%. September PCE came in at 3.6% year on year headline, 3.1% core, both matching forecasts, but Nick Timiraos flagged core PCE at 0.32% on the month, with the 3-month annualized rate jumping to 2.9% from 2.2%, and core services ex-housing up 0.37% to a 3.6% annual rate, matching the highest reading since 2024. The Dallas Fed trimmed mean ran +2.8% annualized in September against +2.0% in August. Timiraos framed the question directly in a post on the October meeting: strong economy, no progress toward 2%, financial conditions not tight, so why hold. Interest-rate futures were pricing roughly a 78% chance of a December hike per Investing.com, with one TradingView headline citing 73%; Polymarket has "no Fed rate cuts in 2026" at 97%.

Equities and rates overnight

US stocks closed lower, driven more by earnings than macro. The S&P 500 finished at 7,720.22, down 0.31%, the Dow at 52,342.56, down 0.25%, and the Nasdaq composite at 26,184.72, down 1.38%, with Alphabet down 12.64% after results and Amazon down 4.25%. Curiously, Treasuries rallied hard against the hot data: the 10-year at 4.934% was down 11.7bp, the 5-year down 12.6bp to 4.745% and the 2-year down 13.3bp to 4.602%, steepening the 10-2 spread to 31bp. Dollar index 101.747, down 0.14%. One Investing.com headline, not read in full, is titled "Fed highlights economic strength but muddies outlook for Treasuries," which is roughly where the price action sits.

ECB holds, Lagarde resigns, December hike flagged

The ECB left all three rates unchanged, deposit facility at 2.50%, main refi 2.65%, marginal lending 2.90%, after hikes in June and September, and warned that elevated energy prices are an upside risk to inflation and a downside risk to growth. Christine Lagarde announced she will step down on 7 February 2027, eight months early; per a headline she said the reason was freedom of expression on non-monetary matters, and Macron has said the succession must be orderly and balanced. Reuters sources, headline-only here, say ECB policymakers expect a 25bp hike on 17 December taking the deposit rate to 2.75%, then a pause, considered near-certain unless energy prices fall sharply, and that new staff estimates show the bond yield rise cutting growth by a cumulative 100bp and inflation by 90bp over 2027-28 versus the September baseline. The euro slipped 0.31% to $1.1118 on the decision. Lagarde also said high-debt countries must plan for rates staying higher, and that hyperscaler debt issuance is part of the yield rise.

Other central banks tightening

The direction of travel elsewhere is the same. The Bank of Canada raised to 2.50% from 2.25%, in line with consensus. Egypt's central bank unexpectedly hiked 100bp, deposit rate to 20% and lending to 21%, its first increase since March 2024, citing difficult external conditions and elevated uncertainty and saying the move protects the disinflation path; a poll of 13 analysts published Tuesday had expected a sixth straight hold. The CBE sees Q3 growth staying near the 4.7% recorded in Q2. Hong Kong's HKMA left its base rate at 4.25%, tracking the Fed. Headlines point to a hawkish hold expected from the BoJ with inflation still sticky, and the Bank of England decides 5 November.

UK budget and European equities

London closed up 0.26% at 10,722.07, DAX up 1.36%. Chancellor John Healey's budget was taken well: fiscal headroom against the mandate narrowed to £15 billion for 2029/30 from £23.6 billion in March but matched primary dealer expectations, the £312 billion gross financing requirement came in below consensus, and the deficit is projected to narrow to 3.4% of GDP by 2027 through fiscal drag. The OBR lifted 2026 growth to 1.2% from 1.1% and cut 2027 to 1.0% from 1.5% on high global energy prices. Shell rallied on Q3 adjusted earnings of $10.81 billion, its best since 2022, on record refining margins and high LNG prices, and lifted its buyback to $5 billion; TotalEnergies' adjusted net income rose 127% year on year to $9.1 billion.

Oil, gold and the Hormuz closure

Brent at 111.54 and WTI at 102.86 sit against a backdrop of the Strait of Hormuz being shut: UKMTO confirmed a commercial vessel on fire after an attack 17km north of Khasab, Oman, with Tehran saying the corridor stays closed until Washington agrees a seven-day diplomatic framework. US crude inventories drew 1.892M against expectations of a 0.100M build, while gasoline stocks rose 3.870M versus an expected 1.400M draw. Gold futures were basically flat at 4,033 having spiked to around 4,083 on the Fed and faded; Kitco headlines attribute the slide toward $4,000 to the stronger growth and inflation data reinforcing hike expectations, with jobless claims below 200k for a sixth week also cited as a weight. There is a large volume of TradingView gold and FX chart posts in this list, which are individual traders' setups rather than news.

Politics and the week ahead

Trump posted on Truth Social claiming credit for the 3.4% print, citing a 21% jump in equipment investment and low core inflation, and tying continued growth to a Republican midterm result; separately he was quoted saying the Fed "hates to cut interest rates." Hassett said there is room to let inflation get under control. Next week brings manufacturing PMI and ISM plus construction spending Monday, JOLTS and factory orders Tuesday, ADP and the trade balance Wednesday, productivity and claims Thursday, and the October employment report plus preliminary UMich sentiment on Friday 6 November. Atlanta Fed GDPNow printed 3.3%. The MBA 30-year mortgage rate was 7.37%, down from 7.41%, with applications up 3.4%.
