Fed week, hold expected Wednesday

The dominant story is Wednesday's FOMC decision, and the Investing.com preview (carried twice, in the UK and US feeds) lays out the setup: the Fed is expected to hold at 4.00% on Oct 28, with fed funds futures pricing roughly a 9-10% chance of a hike this week and about 84-87% by December. Goldman Sachs expects a hold now and a 25bp hike in December, arguing the committee has settled into hiking every other meeting, which sets a high bar for deviating before year-end. Goldman doesn't expect much new from the press conference and is mainly watching whether the statement softens the language about the September hike, possibly borrowing from Vice Chair Jefferson's recent speech. One analyst quoted argues the committee should hike now but won't, with the midterms so close. Futures imply about 2.7 hikes over the next twelve months and peak just above 4.5%, which Goldman calls more hawkish than its own forecast. Chair Warsh's tone at 2:30pm is the piece most people will trade.

The week's data calendar

From the same preview: Tuesday brings durable goods for September (forecast 1.8% versus 0.0% prior), CB consumer confidence (80.5 versus 81.9) and new home sales (649K versus 684K, with 30-year mortgage rates at 7.41%). Thursday is arguably the bigger day — September core PCE is seen at 3.1% year-on-year against 3.0% prior, headline PCE at 3.6% versus 3.4%, Q3 GDP around 3.0-3.2% against 2.2%, with Atlanta Fed GDPNow at 3.5%, and jobless claims at 198K versus 194K. Friday has the employment cost index (0.8% versus 0.9%) and Daly speaking at noon, the first post-meeting Fed voice. The article frames it simply: hot PCE plus strong GDP pushes December toward certainty and opens the March debate, with yields and the dollar higher; a cooler print leaves the every-other-meeting plan intact. Goldman names oil, tied to Iran conflict risk, as the biggest inflation risk.

Monday's closing tape

Per the quote tables embedded in those articles, the US session closed higher ahead of the Fed: S&P 500 7,676.85 up 0.70%, Nasdaq 26,169.38 up 0.83%, Dow 52,361.58 up 0.28%, and the VIX down 5.45% to 18.39. The curve steepened at the front, with the 2-year at 4.722% up 4bp and the 10-year unchanged at 4.986%, putting the 10-2 spread at 31bp. Dollar index 101.85, up 0.05%. Crude was softer, WTI 101.28 down 0.47% and Brent 110.20 down 0.49%, with gold futures at 4,030.95 off 0.18% and silver 54.03 down 0.57%. Europe was firm, FTSE 100 up 0.72% and DAX up 1.03%, while the Nikkei fell 0.80%.

Goldman on AI buildout and inflation

Separately, Goldman published analysis Monday arguing AI infrastructure spending is adding to inflation in developed markets, though temporarily and unevenly. Direct pressure outside the US is currently around 0.1 percentage points. Memory prices are contributing 19 basis points to US core PCE. Goldman sees AI-linked price pressure adding roughly 19bp to year-on-year core inflation in non-US developed markets by Q1 2027, against a peak boost of 50bp for US core PCE and 20bp for US core CPI, with non-US inflation rising as costs pass through to consumer electronics, which carry bigger index weights abroad. On activity the effect is modest: about 0.3% added to developed-market GDP through end-2026, Australia largest at 0.6%, Euro Area 0.2%, UK 0.1%, because data centre input production is concentrated among Asian exporters. Average core inflation boost of 25bp through Q1 2027, up to 33bp versus long-run trend, Japan 0.3pp and the UK 0.2pp. Goldman expects these pressures to fade through 2027 as memory prices ease.

Earnings collide with the Fed

Both Fed previews flag the timing problem: Microsoft and Alphabet report Wednesday after the decision, Amazon, Intel and SanDisk on Thursday. The stated concern is that a hawkish Fed plus heavy capex guidance could pressure large-cap tech together, with one cited analysis asking whether big spending plans require equity issuance and fewer buybacks. A TradingView note on Nasdaq futures said the contract was up about 1.2% around 29,465, reclaiming the 29,230 floor it broke last Thursday, attributing the bounce to easing oil (WTI down over 2% that morning) and tech leadership; the author notes the broader structure is still lower highs from 31,616 on 5 Oct to 30,113 on 20 Oct, with the 50-day near 30,000 and the 21-day near 30,400 both above price. That piece puts hold odds at roughly 90% on a 3.75-4% band, slightly different framing from the Investing.com 4.00% figure.

Gold ahead of the decision

Gold dominates the retail-analysis flow, and the views are split. One TradingView author notes XAUUSD is holding above prior support at $3,940-3,960 despite weeks of bearish momentum, and points to a possible divergence with the dollar index, which has broken to a new high but may be sweeping liquidity rather than genuinely breaking out; he leans bullish on that resilience plus seasonal Indian festival demand, while conceding there's no confirmation. Another, the KOG report, says volume isn't there to break the range with FOMC coming. A third opened a short and closed it manually, calling the price action "trappy." Headline-only items around gold run both ways: Kitco reports spot gold and silver higher in early US trade Monday as falling crude eased inflation concerns, with gold rebounding above $4,000, while other headlines flag the break below $4,000, Jeffrey Christian discussing silver under $55, and a Kitco survey showing Wall Street doubting near-term strength.

Other central banks

Headline-only, but worth knowing before the open: the Bank of Canada is expected to hike Wednesday to stem energy-inflation spillover, Pakistan's central bank raised its key rate to 12%, an ECB survey shows euro zone firms finding credit harder to get, and French yields retreated from 2002 highs after Moody's held the rating. The ECB meets this week too. Yen headlines have USDJPY steady ahead of the BOJ with 157.70 capping.

Data already out

Michigan sentiment for the final October read came in at 48.0 against 46.3 consensus and 48.1 prior, with current conditions sharply weaker at 46.7 versus 50.9 and expectations better at 48.8 versus 46.3; one-year inflation expectations 4.7%, five-year 3.5%, both a tick above the prior month. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index rose to +0.07 from -0.08, with production stronger, employment flat and consumer spending and housing weaker. Treasury Secretary Bessent posted that 72,000 manufacturing jobs have been added so far in 2026 after more than 200,000 lost in the prior administration's final two years, and that blue-collar manufacturing weekly wages are up 3.5% in real terms since the president took office.

Sell-side positioning notes

Three strategist headlines, each with figures attached. Morgan Stanley's Michael Wilson expects the equity correction to end as risks including the midterms clear, with near-term downside of 7,100-7,200 and a year-end base case of 8,000 on the S&P 500. Ed Yardeni stays bullish on US equities and treats selloffs as buying opportunities, citing earnings and fundamentals, with geopolitics, Fed hikes and the midterms as risks. Goldman separately warns global growth risks are building into 2027 from higher energy prices, rising bond yields and slowing AI investment. Bank of America reports Red Sea shipping traffic back to 65% of normal from 50% in September, with oil tanker rates still as high as $650,000 a day and dry bulk up 31% year-over-year.

Calendar entries with no content behind them

A large block of this section is Nasdaq economic calendar entries. The ones opened in full returned only site boilerplate, no data, so what you have is what the headline carries: China industrial profits YTD prior 15.7%, UK BRC shop price index consensus 1.6% versus 1.4%, Japan CSPI unchanged at 3.7%, South Korea GDP 0.7% versus 0.6% and consumer confidence prior 106.6, plus an RBA speech from Assistant Governor Jones. The German Ifo (consensus 90.0 versus 89.9), UK CBI distributive trades (-47 versus -55), and a long run of CFTC positioning lines are headline-only. Of those, speculative gold net longs fell to 199.9K from 207.9K, crude to 89.3K from 100.3K, copper to 57.4K from 68.5K, and S&P 500 net shorts widened slightly to -142.7K. The remainder of the section is retail chart commentary on gold, bitcoin, EURUSD and the indices, most of it waiting on Wednesday rather than saying anything new.
