CPI, NFP, Fed, rates — scheduled, can push

Brief

Fed week is the whole story

Everything in this section points at one event: the FOMC decision on Wednesday, October 28. The Reuters piece carried by Investing.com lays out the setup. The Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023 to fight above-target inflation, and Fed funds futures late Friday put less than a 10% chance on another hike this week, partly because investors doubt the Fed wants to move a week before the November 3 midterms. December is the live one, with futures showing roughly an 80% probability of a hike then. Walter Todd of Greenwood Capital said he'll be listening to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference for hints on December. Thursday brings US GDP and core PCE, Friday the Employment Cost Index. Several of the gold and FX chart pieces reference the same calendar.

Stocks wobbling on the AI trade

The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,623.68, down 0.52%, with the Dow off 1.23% and the Nasdaq down 0.21% after Thursday's biggest one-day drop since June. The index is about 2.5% below its October 6 record close of 7,818.93 and has now had two straight down weeks, with VIX around 19.45. The trigger was disappointment in quarterly reports from Meta and Lam Research, which put the spotlight on hyperscaler capex running around $800 billion this year. Alphabet and Microsoft report Wednesday, Amazon Thursday, and roughly a third of the S&P 500 reports this week alongside Intel, Sandisk, Eli Lilly, Exxon, Chevron and Caterpillar. Third-quarter S&P 500 earnings are tracking up more than 32% year over year on LSEG IBES data with over 100 companies in. Nick Giorgi of Alpine Macro said the market isn't giving the benefit of the doubt to heavy AI spenders, which he called healthy but painful short term. King Lip at BakerAvenue said earnings will decide whether this is a buying opportunity or a deeper correction. Investors are also watching the midterms, with growing bets Democrats take Congress.

Gold broke $4,000

Spot gold closed Friday around $3,995, down $170.05 on the week, over 4%, its worst week since early June, with a low near $3,975. The Kitco headline and the longer gold piece give the same reasoning: rising oil prices, persistent inflation fears and expectations of further Fed tightening overwhelmed safe-haven demand, and Thursday's tech-led equity selloff triggered another round of liquidations. Notably gold fell even as the 10-year yield dipped below 5%, which the author reads as sentiment and forced selling rather than carry cost. Kitco's weekly survey has Wall Street doubting near-term strength with Main Street still a bullish minority. A string of retail TradingView gold posts cluster around the same levels, watching $3,940, $3,930 and $3,877 on the downside and $4,035 to $4,110 as the first resistance band. These are individual chart opinions, not research, and they split between a further leg down and a liquidity sweep followed by a sharp bounce.

Bitcoin at $80K after weekend liquidations

Investing.com reports Bitcoin steadied near $80,400 on Sunday, after falling as low as $79,146 on Saturday, its weakest in more than a month. More than $810 million of crypto positions were liquidated over 24 hours, about $689 million of them bullish bets, per Coinglass, with thin weekend liquidity amplifying the forced closes once $80,000 broke. BTC slipped below its 50-day moving average near $81,700 and is tracking a fourth straight daily decline and its first monthly loss since June. The piece also notes Fidelity Digital Assets data that perpetual preferred stock offerings have funded roughly 136,000 Bitcoin of corporate treasury purchases since 2025, and that Strategy recently spent $193 million buying back preferred shares while adding just 267 Bitcoin. Ether was down 0.49% at $2,331.61, XRP up 1.54%, Solana up 0.34%, BNB up 1.49%. The several TradingView BTC posts all describe the same thing in technical language: price pinned between roughly $80,000 support and $83,000 to $85,000 resistance, waiting on the Fed.

Oil and the inflation channel

The common thread under gold, crypto and rates is energy. WTI futures were up 3.99% at $103.44, Brent at $111.70 with one Investing.com piece citing Brent above $117 amid the Iran war, and Kitco's headline ties the move to Hormuz tensions pushing crude toward five-month highs. That's the double edge the gold article spells out: geopolitical risk should support gold, but the inflation impulse from oil raises the odds of higher-for-longer rates and works against it. Treasuries sit with the 10-year at 4.988%, the 30-year at 5.315%, the 5-year at 4.807%, and the 10-2 spread widened sharply to 31.32bp.

Friday's US data

The final October University of Michigan sentiment index came in at 48.0 against 46.3 expected but below September's 48.1, with current conditions dropping to 46.7 from 50.9 and expectations improving to 48.8 from 46.3. One-year inflation expectations were 4.7%, five-year 3.5%, both a tick above the prior month. The flash S&P Global PMIs, per the headline summary, showed a composite of 57.6 from 58.4, services 57.9, and manufacturing at 56.0, a 53-month high, described as strong growth with accelerating inflation. Jobless claims came in at 194K against 200K expected, continuing claims 1,728K. The KC Fed composite slipped to 11 from 14, and the leading index was flat at 0.0%.

Europe softening, UK mixed

The October flash PMIs showed the euro area losing ground: composite 51.9 against 52.7 expected, services 51.7 versus 52.6, manufacturing 52.4. France was the weak spot with services and composite both at 48.4, under 50, against a 50.7 and 50.5 consensus. Germany held up better on manufacturing at 54.2 but services came in soft at 51.7. Euro zone consumer confidence fell to -17.9. The UK ran the other way on surveys, with composite, services and manufacturing PMIs all at or above 52.8 and beating consensus, though September retail sales dropped 0.4% and core fell 0.7% against expectations for a 0.1% decline. Russia's central bank held its key rate at 14% as expected. Brazil's mid-month CPI came in at 0.32% versus 0.43% expected and 0.70% prior.

CFTC positioning

The weekly commitments data shows speculators net short the euro at -134.5K, a small trim from -137.6K, short sterling at -80.4K versus -107.0K, short the Aussie at -127.3K and getting shorter, and long the yen at 69.9K, up from 50.2K. On commodities, gold net longs eased to 199.9K from 207.9K, silver to 19.8K, crude to 89.3K from 100.3K and copper to 57.4K from 68.5K. S&P 500 futures net positioning stayed short at -142.7K while Nasdaq 100 stayed net long at 50.7K.

The rest

The remaining items are mostly routine calendar entries, duplicate CFTC lines and a long tail of retail TradingView chart posts on gold, Bitcoin, the dollar index and single FX pairs. The DXY post notes the index closed the week bearish around the 101.45 to 102.08 range, consistent with the Dollar Index quote at 101.60. Nothing in that tail adds to what's above.
