CPI, NFP, Fed, rates — scheduled, can push

Brief

The week's setup, Fed plus a third of the S&P 500

Everything in this section points at the same two events. The Fed meets October 27-28 with a decision Wednesday, and roughly a third of S&P 500 companies report, including Alphabet and Microsoft on Wednesday and Amazon Thursday. The Reuters piece framing the week notes the Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023 to deal with above-target inflation, and Fed funds futures late Friday put under a 10% chance of another hike at this meeting, partly because investors doubt the Fed wants to move a week before the November 3 midterms. December is the live one, with futures around an 80% probability of a hike then. Walter Todd of Greenwood Capital said he'll be listening to Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference for hints on December. Q3 S&P 500 earnings are tracking more than 32% growth year-on-year with 100-plus companies reported, per LSEG IBES, and hyperscaler capex is running around $800 billion this year. Nick Giorgi of Alpine Macro said the market is no longer giving the benefit of the doubt to heavy AI spenders, which he called healthy but painful short term. Intel, Sandisk, Eli Lilly, Exxon, Chevron and Caterpillar also report. The Reuters piece also flags growing bets that Democrats take Congress at the midterms.

Equities rolled over into the weekend

The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,623.68, down 0.52% on the day, a second straight weekly loss and about 2.5% below the October 6 record close of 7,818.93. The Dow fell 1.23% to 52,215.16, the Nasdaq slipped 0.21% to 25,955.34, and the VIX sits near 19.45. Thursday was the Nasdaq's biggest daily drop since June, driven by disappointment in Meta and Lam Research results. A TradingView piece from NaranjCapital frames 7,600 as the support being tested, with 7,800 as failed resistance and 7,300 as the next level below. The S&P is still up 11% in 2026. CFTC positioning shows specs net short 142.7K on the S&P 500, slightly more short than the prior 141.0K, while Nasdaq 100 net longs edged up to 50.7K from 48.5K.

Gold below $4,000, oil above $100

Gold broke the $4,000 level, with spot closing Friday at $3,995.06 after a weekly fall of $170.05, over 4%, its worst week since early June. Futures sit at $4,010 after a 1.24% drop. The explanation offered across several of these pieces is the same: rising oil is reviving inflation fears and expectations the Fed stays tight, which raises the opportunity cost of holding a metal that pays nothing. One note points out gold fell even with the 10-year yield dropping below 5%, suggesting technical selling and liquidation rather than rate logic alone; Kitco's wire ties the Thursday tech selloff to a further wave of gold liquidations, and separately cites Hormuz tensions behind the crude move. WTI jumped 3.99% Friday to $103.44 and Brent is around $111.70, with one article citing Brent above $117 amid the Iran war. CFTC gold net longs eased to 199.9K from 207.9K, silver to 19.8K from 22.6K, crude to 89.3K from 100.3K. The TradingView gold notes are all watching the same band, roughly 3,877 to 4,000 support with 3,790-3,845 below, ahead of Wednesday's decision and Thursday's core PCE.

Bitcoin's weekend flush

Bitcoin fell as low as $79,146 on Saturday, its weakest in more than a month, before recovering to around $80,936 Sunday. Over $810 million in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, roughly $689 million of that long, per Coinglass, with thin weekend liquidity amplifying the forced selling. BTC is below its 50-day moving average near $81,700. The same article notes Fidelity Digital Assets data that perpetual preferred offerings have funded about 136,000 Bitcoin in purchases since 2025, and that Strategy recently spent $193 million buying back preferred shares while adding just 267 Bitcoin. Ether was down 0.56% to $2,369, XRP up 1.63%, Solana flat at $102.68. Hardware wallet maker Keystone disclosed a customer data breach covering names, addresses and purchase details, saying keys and payment data were not exposed.

Data: consumer gloom, hot PMIs, soft Europe

Final October University of Michigan sentiment came in at 48.0 against 46.3 expected but below September's 48.1, with current conditions dropping hard to 46.7 from 50.9 and expectations rising to 48.8 from 46.3. Inflation expectations ticked up, 4.7% one-year and 3.5% five-year. The flash US S&P Global composite PMI was 57.6, off 58.4 prior, with manufacturing at a 53-month high of 56.0, which one post summarised as strong growth alongside accelerating inflation. Jobless claims were 194K against 200K expected. Europe went the other way: eurozone composite 51.9 versus 52.7 expected, France services falling into contraction at 48.4, Germany services 51.7, and eurozone consumer confidence at -17.9. The UK was the exception with composite PMI 53.1 against 51.8 expected, though retail sales fell 0.4% and core retail sales fell 0.7%, both worse than the -0.1% consensus. Russia's central bank held its key rate at 14% as expected.

Dollar and FX positioning

The dollar index is around 101.60, essentially flat, with a TradingView piece marking 101.45 and 102.08 as the week's range boundaries into the FOMC. The CFTC data shows shorts being trimmed in several currencies: GBP net short narrowed to -80.4K from -107.0K, CAD to -74.7K from -94.8K, CHF to -18.1K from -22.1K, EUR to -134.5K from -137.6K. Yen net longs grew to 69.9K from 50.2K. Going the other way, AUD shorts deepened to -127.3K and NZD to -58.1K from -47.0K.

Politics in the mix

Obama campaigned in Detroit on Saturday for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers, blaming Trump's tariffs and the Iran war for higher fuel prices, household costs and the deficit. Democrats need a net four seats; the Michigan race is the most expensive in the state's history and fills retiring Senator Gary Peters' seat.

The rest

The bulk of the remaining 180 items are headline-only economic calendar prints, duplicate CFTC entries and TradingView chart setups on gold, bitcoin and the indices that repeat the levels already covered above. Nothing further there changes the picture.
