Gold slides as oil spikes on Hormuz tension

The loudest macro story is a sharp break in precious metals against a crude rally. A market wire post flags gold futures down 1.10% to $3,980.80 an ounce, testing the $4,000 level and heading for a weekly loss of nearly 4%, with the stated driver being rising oil prices feeding inflation concerns and expectations of higher rates. Kitco's morning report says spot gold and silver were sharply lower in early US trading Friday, extending Thursday's heavy losses, as renewed Middle East tension pushed crude toward five-month highs. Investor's Business Daily's week-ender ties the two together directly: stocks closed the week lower as oil soared. There is a thick cluster of headline-only TradingView gold pieces around the same move, most of them arguing lower levels from here with $3,978, $3,917, $3,880 and $3,600 named as reference points, plus one noting gold, silver, bitcoin and the Nasdaq fell together. Those are chart opinions from individual posters, not reported news, and I have only their headlines.

US data: strong growth, sticky inflation expectations

The US releases point the same way, growth holding up while inflation readings refuse to cool. October flash S&P Global PMIs showed composite 57.6 against 58.4 prior, services 57.9 from 58.8, and manufacturing at 56.0, described as a 53-month high, with the accompanying summary flagging accelerating inflation alongside the strong growth. Final University of Michigan sentiment was 48.0 against 46.3 expected but still under September's 48.1, with current conditions dropping to 46.7 from 50.9 and expectations improving to 48.8 from 46.3. Inflation expectations ticked up on both horizons: one-year 4.7% versus 4.6% prior, five-year 3.5% versus 3.4%. Labour data stayed tight, with initial claims 194K against 200K expected and the four-week average 197.75K, though continuing claims rose to 1,728K from 1,703K. The Leading Index was flat at 0.0% versus -0.1% expected, and the KC Fed composite slipped to 11 from 14. On the Fed's own balance sheet, assets were little changed at $6,754B from $6,756B while reserve balances fell to $2.969T from $3.030T. Short bill auctions cleared lower: 8-week at 4.015% from 4.050%, 4-week at 3.945% from 4.000%.

Europe PMIs soften, France contracts

Europe went the other way on activity. France's flash PMIs all dropped into or near contraction, services 48.4 against 50.7 expected, composite 48.4 against 50.5, manufacturing 49.3 against 50.5. Germany was split, manufacturing beating at 54.2 but services missing at 51.7, leaving the composite at 52.8 against 53.3 expected. Eurozone composite came in at 51.9 versus 52.7 expected, services 51.7 versus 52.6, manufacturing 52.4 versus 52.7, and consumer confidence weakened to -17.9 from -16.8. The UK was the exception on surveys, with composite, services and manufacturing all at or above 52.8 and beating a 51.8 consensus, but the hard data was poor: retail sales -0.4% against -0.1% expected and core -0.7%, and CBI industrial trends orders collapsed to -32 from -9. Bailey spoke, headline-only. An Investing.com preview frames the ECB meeting around French political and fiscal risk.

Asia: AI rout and a hot Japanese CPI

Investing.com reports Asian stocks falling, with an AI-led rout hitting South Korea hardest and Japan unsettled by strong CPI. Two TradingView posts flag Japanese inflation at a nine-month high for September; the calendar carries national core CPI with a 2.1% consensus against 1.7% prior. Several FX notes tie this to a BoJ hiking cycle weighing on USDJPY, while Citi is cited as expecting USD/JPY to stay range-bound through the BoJ decision. China FDI improved slightly to -4.30% from -5.30%. Singapore core CPI undershot at 2.00% versus 2.30% expected. India's PMIs firmed, composite 56.70 from 55.90, with bank loan growth 18.2% and FX reserves easing to $721.02B from $726.03B.

CFTC positioning: longs trimmed across commodities

The latest CFTC speculative net positions show broad reduction in commodity length. Gold longs fell to 199.9K from 207.9K, silver to 19.8K from 22.6K, crude to 89.3K from 100.3K, copper to 57.4K from 68.5K. Grains were cut hard, corn to 286.7K from 358.4K and soybeans to 246.6K from 271.1K, while wheat shorts deepened to -29.3K from -17.6K and natural gas shorts to -241.3K from -233.6K. Equity index positioning barely moved, S&P 500 net short -142.7K from -141.0K and Nasdaq 100 net long 50.7K from 48.5K. In FX, yen longs jumped to 69.9K from 50.2K and sterling shorts were covered heavily to -80.4K from -107.0K, with CAD shorts cut to -74.7K from -94.8K, EUR to -134.5K and CHF to -18.1K; the antipodeans went the other way, AUD shorts widening to -127.3K and NZD to -58.1K, and Brazilian real longs were cut to 32.5K from 46.7K. Note these items were served with the Nasdaq calendar page boilerplate rather than commentary, so the numbers are all there is.

Central banks and the week ahead

Russia's central bank held its key rate at 14.00% as expected, citing inflation concerns per the Investing.com write-up headline. Brazil's mid-month CPI slowed to 0.32% from 0.70%, below the 0.43% consensus. Canada's producer-side data ran hot, IPPI 2.0% against 0.9% expected and raw materials 27.0% from 22.9%, while manufacturing sales stalled at 0.1% from 1.1%. Looking forward, both IBD and Investing.com frame next week the same way: an FOMC meeting plus a heavy earnings calendar landing on an AI-driven rally that both pieces describe as fragile. Baker Hughes rigs were flat at 603 total, with oil rigs up one to 460.

Two Egyptian single-name chart notes

Two of the full reads are retail TradingView write-ups on Egyptian equities rather than macro. The Cleopatra Hospital piece describes the stock in a correction below its 200-day average at 14.71 EGP, sitting on liquidity support at 13.21 with an oversold RSI of 27.29, next supports at 12.63 and the 52-week low of 11.00, and cites a DCF target of 16.20 against a consensus 17.48; the fundamental case rests on tariff pricing power against EGP inflation and the January 2026 opening of Cleopatra El Tagamoa. The SODIC note has the stock up 36.8% year to date but in a downtrend channel from an all-time high of 36.95 EGP, consolidating between the 50% and 61.8% retracements with 200-day support at 23.48 and a lower zone at 19.88, trading at 8.0x earnings against a 9.8x peer average, with Aldar and ADQ holding over 85.6% between them and a 14.3% free float. Both authors say they are waiting on the sidelines.
