Gold's slide and the oil-inflation link

The clearest macro story in this batch is gold breaking down. Per a DeItaone post, gold futures fell 1.10% to $3,980.80/oz and were heading for a weekly loss of nearly 4%, with the stated driver being rising oil prices feeding inflation worries and expectations of higher rates; the same post referenced a Saxo Bank caution on short-term speculation. Kitco's AM and PM reports tie the same move to renewed Middle East tension, with Hormuz worries pushing crude toward five-month highs and dragging spot gold and silver sharply lower, notably even as yields fell. One headline notes gold, silver, bitcoin and the Nasdaq all fell together. A large share of this section is retail TradingView commentary on gold levels ($3,600, $4,000, 4,021, 4,045), which I'd treat as noise rather than information.

US data: strong activity, sticky inflation expectations

The US prints lean to the "hot growth, hot inflation" side. October flash S&P Global PMIs, as summarised by DeItaone, showed composite 57.6 against 58.4 prior, services 57.9 from 58.8, and manufacturing 56.0, described as a 53-month high, with the post flagging accelerating inflation alongside the growth. Final University of Michigan sentiment came in at 48.0 versus 46.3 expected but below September's 48.1, with current conditions dropping to 46.7 from 50.9 while expectations rose to 48.8 from 46.3. Inflation expectations ticked up on both horizons, 4.7% at one year from 4.6% and 3.5% at five years from 3.4%. Labour data stayed tight: initial claims 194K against 200K expected, four-week average 197.75K, continuing claims 1,728K, slightly above the 1,720K consensus. The Leading Index was flat at 0.0% versus -0.1% expected. Regional softening showed in the KC Fed composite at 11 (consensus 12, prior 14) and manufacturing index at 16 from 20. Bill auctions cleared lower, 4-week at 3.945% from 4.000% and 8-week at 4.015% from 4.050%. The Fed's balance sheet was little changed at $6,754B, with reserve balances down to $2.969T from $3.030T.

Europe: France drops into contraction

The October flash PMIs split sharply. France fell below 50 across the board, services 48.4 against 50.7 expected, composite 48.4, manufacturing 49.3, all down from above-50 prior readings, though the separate French business survey came in strong at 105 versus 101 expected. Germany was mixed, with manufacturing beating at 54.2 but services slipping to 51.7 against 52.5 expected. The euro zone aggregate missed on all three: composite 51.9, services 51.7, manufacturing 52.4, each below consensus and below the prior month. Euro zone consumer confidence also missed at -17.9. The UK went the other way, with composite and services both at 53.1 and manufacturing 52.8, all well above the 51.8 consensus, but retail sales undercut that with headline -0.4% and core -0.7% against -0.1% expected, and CBI industrial trends orders collapsed to -32 versus -20 expected. Bailey spoke at the MPC; no detail beyond the calendar line.

CFTC positioning

The CFTC speculative net position lines were read in full, but the pages carried only the Nasdaq calendar boilerplate, so the figures in each line are all there is. The direction of travel: shorts were trimmed in sterling (-80.4K from -107.0K), the Canadian dollar (-74.7K from -94.8K) and the Swiss franc (-18.1K from -22.1K), while yen longs built to 69.9K from 50.2K. Shorts grew in the Aussie (-127.3K from -117.3K) and the kiwi (-58.1K from -47.0K); the euro was roughly unchanged at -134.5K. Commodity longs were cut fairly broadly: corn 286.7K from 358.4K, copper 57.4K from 68.5K, crude 89.3K from 100.3K, gold 199.9K from 207.9K, silver 19.8K from 22.6K, soybeans 246.6K from 271.1K. Wheat shorts deepened to -29.3K and natural gas shorts to -241.3K. Index positioning barely moved, S&P 500 at -142.7K and Nasdaq 100 at 50.7K.

Rest of the world

Russia's central bank held at 14.00% as expected, with Investing.com's headline citing inflation concerns. Brazil's mid-month CPI came in at 0.32% against 0.43% expected and 0.70% prior, a clear slowdown. Japan is in focus: two headlines flag September inflation at a nine-month high, and Investing.com reports Asian stocks falling as an AI rout hit South Korea with Japan "spooked by strong CPI." Citi is cited as expecting USD/JPY to stay range-bound into the BoJ decision. Singapore core CPI undershot at 2.00% versus 2.30% expected. India's PMIs improved to 56.7 composite, while money supply and deposit growth decelerated and FX reserves fell to $721.02B from $726.03B. Hong Kong unemployment ticked up to 3.9% and China FDI remained negative at -4.30%, an improvement from -5.30%.

Week ahead framing

Three pieces set up next week around the same two things. Investor's Business Daily notes the market ended the week lower with oil soaring, ahead of the Fed meeting and a heavy earnings week. Investing.com's "Take Five" and a second piece frame it as the AI trade meeting the Fed, calling the rally rickety. A separate Investing.com preview poses five questions for the ECB with France as the live issue, which lines up with the French PMI contraction above. US oil rigs were essentially flat per Baker Hughes, total count 603 unchanged and oil rigs 460 from 459, so the crude move is not a domestic supply story.
