Treasury yields crack below 5%

The dominant story into the open is the bond rally. The 10-year yield fell below 5% for the first time since 23 September, last down 14.97 basis points at 4.996%, with the five-year down 14.33bp to 4.827% (lowest since 23 September) and the three-year down 13.93bp to 4.771% (lowest since 18 September). A TradingView piece from tastyfx ties the move to investors rushing into bonds on renewed concern over the scale and financing of AI infrastructure spending, which it says materially cut expectations for further Fed tightening. Consistent with that, one wire headline states traders no longer fully price a Fed rate hike before end-2026. Note the Investing.com quote board embedded in another article shows the 10-year back at 4.994%, up 4.5bp, so some of this had retraced by the time that page was captured, and the 20-year auction cleared at 5.469% versus 5.420% previously.

Dollar loses its yield edge

USD/CHF traded around the low-0.82s after a sharp overnight decline, per tastyfx, which puts the cause squarely on the US side: falling Treasury yields and fading hike odds removed the dollar's recent yield advantage, while the franc picked up a haven bid even though the SNB sits at 0% with inflation inside target. The piece notes the pair rolled over from 0.8380-0.8400 toward 0.8250. Headline-only items point the same way, with Nasdaq reporting the dollar fading on weaker US interest rate differentials, the Canadian dollar strengthening on oil and BoC hike bets, and USDJPY under pressure from the BoJ hiking cycle. Headlines also flag mounting eurozone troubles weighing on the euro and cable testing $1.34 ahead of the Fed.

Gold and silver hit hard by the oil-inflation channel

Precious metals fell hard despite lower yields, which is the unusual part. Kitco headlines attribute it to renewed Middle East tensions, specifically attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, pushing crude toward five-month highs and reinforcing inflation and higher-rate concerns. Gold futures fell 1.10% to $3,980.80 and were heading for a weekly loss of nearly 4%, with Saxo Bank cited on short-term positioning; an earlier note had gold down 1.3% at $4,083 with Capital.com's Monte Safieddine describing a difficult cocktail for the metal. The Investing.com quote board shows gold futures at 4,012.35 and WTI at $103.61, Brent $117.06. A separate Kitco item carries Auspice Capital arguing gold has not been a reliable inflation hedge and investors should diversify across the commodity complex. The rest of the gold coverage here is retail chart commentary on levels, not new information.

Thursday's rare cross-asset session

A TradingView post by mitrakmt123 documents Thursday 22 October in detail: Nasdaq Composite -2.6%, spot gold -2.8%, silver futures -4.6%, Bitcoin -3.2%, and the semiconductor ETF SOXX -6.8%, while the 10-year yield fell 19bp to 4.95% and bonds rallied. The Dow was flat, Russell 2000 +0.1%, and staples and utilities rose. The author counted only four sessions since August 2000 combining gold, silver and Nasdaq declines of that size with a 10bp-plus drop in the 10-year yield, the others being October and December 2008 and September 2011, all of which were far deeper sell-offs (S&P down 4.0%, 8.9% and 3.2%, VIX at 45, 69 and 41 versus 1.2% and VIX 19.03 this time). He is explicit that he found no reason for it: no dated market wrap, the real yield fell 13-14bp, the dollar index moved only -0.17%, and high-yield spreads widened only from 3.27 to 3.40. He raises forced selling as an untestable hypothesis and says the thresholds were chosen after the fact.

US data, strong growth with inflation heat

Final October University of Michigan sentiment came in at 48.0 against 46.3 expected, still below September's 48.1, with current conditions at 46.7 versus 50.9 prior, and the headline notes inflation fears rose. The flash S&P Global October PMI showed composite 57.6 versus 58.4 prior, services 57.9 versus 58.8, and manufacturing at 56.0, a 53-month high, with the posting flagging accelerating inflation alongside strong growth. Labour data stayed tight: initial claims 194K against 200K expected, four-week average 197.75K, continuing claims 1,728K. The Leading Index was flat at 0.0% versus -0.1% expected, while regional surveys softened, with the KC Fed composite at 11 against 12 expected and the manufacturing index at 16 from 20.

Overseas central banks and data

Japan's September core CPI hit a nine-month high and crossed the BoJ target, which headlines say firms up near-term hike chances and spooked Japanese equities; Asia fell broadly, with Investing.com reporting the AI rout hitting South Korea hardest. Brazil's IPCA-15 rose 0.32% in the month to mid-October, down from 0.70% and below the 0.43% consensus, with food and beverages up 0.88% and personal expenses up 0.55% offsetting a 0.1% fall in housing; annual inflation was 4.62%, up from 4.47% but under the 4.73% expected, against a 3% target with a 1.5-point band. The central bank meets 3-4 November after a fifth straight 25bp cut took the rate to 13.75%, and the data lands before a tight runoff between Flavio Bolsonaro and Lula. Elsewhere, Turkey cut 100bp to 36%, Russia held at 14% on inflation concerns, Euro zone consumer confidence came in weaker at -17.9 versus -17.0 expected, and UK CBI industrial trends orders dropped to -32 against -20 expected. The Fed's balance sheet was 6,754B with reserve balances at 2.969T, down from 3.030T.

Week ahead and the rest

Next week's October Fed decision is the stated focus in Schaeffer's week-ahead and Reuters' Take Five, which frames it as the AI trade meeting the Fed. The remainder of this section is calendar entries with no actuals yet (Japan, Australia, eurozone and UK PMIs, UK retail sales and GfK, Michigan detail lines), the weekly CFTC positioning list, and a large volume of retail chart posts on gold, FX pairs and indices. One full-text item, a GatorResearch post on Hasbro, is single-stock rather than macro: it describes a strong earnings reaction pushing the shares out of a long base toward all-time highs on heavy volume, with the author disclosing a position from about 113 and noting the stock has moved over 18% in a week and 33% in four weeks.
