Equities sold off hard on AI financing worries

The backdrop into the open is a risk-off tape led by tech. Quotes carried in the Investing.com pages show the Nasdaq down 694 points, or 2.60%, to 26,008.86, the S&P 500 off 1.19% at 7,664.99, while the Dow was essentially flat at 52,866.85, up 0.02%. The VIX was up 13.19% to 18.88. Investing.com's own headline framing attributes the slide to elevated AI financing worries, with Meta down 6.98% after earnings, Nvidia down 4.40%, Amazon down 4.57% and Micron down 6.26%, while Apple rose 1.25%. Europe was weaker too: Euro Stoxx 50 down 1.96%, DAX down 1.07%, Nikkei down 2.65%, FTSE 100 down 0.26%.

Treasuries rallied, 10-year back under 5%

Bonds rallied sharply alongside the equity selloff. Walter Bloomberg flagged the 10-year yield falling below 5% for the first time since September 23, last down 14.97 basis points at 4.996%; the five-year fell 14.33bp to 4.827%, its lowest since September 23, and the three-year dropped 13.93bp to 4.771%, lowest since September 18. The Investing.com quote panels show the same picture across the curve, with the 30-year down 14.4bp to 5.293% and the 10-2 spread widening 15% to 31bp. The same account reported traders no longer fully price in a Fed rate hike before end-2026, which is the key repricing of the day. Note the direction of travel here: this is a market that had been pricing hikes, not cuts. A $13bn 20-year auction cleared at 5.469% against 5.420% prior, and the 20-year pared its decline afterwards.

Oil at the centre of the inflation story

Crude is the thread running through most of this. WTI sits near $99.43 and Brent near $113.15 after drone attacks on Saudi and Russian energy infrastructure and renewed attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, per the Canadian dollar piece and Kitco's morning report. That is feeding directly into rate expectations and hurting gold: Kitco reported gold and silver sharply lower despite lower yields, and Walter Bloomberg had gold down 1.3% to $4,083, with Capital.com's Monte Safieddine describing a difficult mix for the metal. A separate headline puts gold down 2% at a two-month low on oil-driven rate fears. Futures quotes in the Investing.com pages show gold around $4,044 and silver $54.72, both down about 0.4-0.5%.

Fed decision next Wednesday

Schaeffer's week-ahead lays out the calendar. Monday October 26 is empty. Tuesday brings September durable goods, Case-Shiller, new home sales and consumer confidence, plus day one of the FOMC meeting. The rate decision lands Wednesday October 28 at 2pm ET, alongside advance goods trade balance and wholesale and retail inventories. Thursday has advance Q3 GDP, jobless claims, and September personal income, spending and the PCE price index including core. Friday closes with the employment cost index and the Chicago PMI. Earnings that week include Alphabet, Eli Lilly, Coca-Cola, T-Mobile, PayPal, Ford, FedEx and Coinbase. One TradingView headline argues for a status quo on October 28 despite inflation.

France, the UK and Canada

Outside the US, the sharpest move is in French debt. Walter Bloomberg reported the French 10-year yield hitting 5.142%, the highest since 2002, with the spread over Bunds widening to 173bp, the widest since 2011, citing budget uncertainty, political instability and violent protests; a later post put the risk premium at 175bp. In the UK, September CPI came in at 3.5% against 3.4% consensus and 3.1% prior, core at 2.8%, RPI 3.9%, with PPI input at 1.5% versus 1.3% expected; public sector net borrowing was £24.5bn against £23.8bn consensus. Headlines tie that to a BoE hike being seen in November. In Canada, Investing.com reported the US dollar at around C$1.4025, its lowest since September 21, a sixth straight session of loonie gains, driven by firmer crude and positioning for a possible Bank of Canada hike on October 28 that would take the benchmark to 2.50%. Turkey's central bank cut 100bp to 36%.

US data already out

Wednesday's US numbers were soft on housing: pending home sales fell 7.3% against an expected 0.7% decline, housing starts fell 5.2% versus 1.9% expected, and the MBA mortgage market index dropped to 188.6 with the 30-year rate at 7.41%. EIA crude inventories drew 3.060M against a 0.100M consensus and gasoline drew 2.952M against 0.400M, while distillates built 1.675M where a 1.200M draw was expected. Atlanta Fed GDPNow sits at 3.5%. Today's jobless claims are expected at 200K against 199K prior, with continuing claims seen at 1,720K.

ECB, Fed balance sheet and odds and ends

ECB policymaker Alvaro Santos Pereira, the Portuguese central bank governor, said Thursday that Europe needs to push single market integration into services, transport and energy, citing the geopolitical situation and technology gaps; he said the remaining barriers are harder to remove because they come from national institutions and regulations. Lagarde and Lane are both on the speaking calendar, as are Bundesbank's Nagel and Mauderer and the BoE's Bailey. A Brookings paper, covered twice, suggests the Fed could shrink its balance sheet to $4.5 trillion; the current balance sheet reads 6,756B with reserve balances at 3.030T. Norway's $2.3 trillion oil fund lost $30 billion in the third quarter, per a headline-only OilPrice item. Eurozone ZEW economic sentiment came in at 18.5 against 23.6 expected and 25.8 prior.

Caveat on the calendar items

A large share of this section is Nasdaq economic calendar entries whose full text scraped as empty boilerplate, so the only real content in them is the consensus and prior figures in the headline lines. Upcoming on those: Bank of Korea expected to hold at 3.00%, Japan national core CPI seen at 2.1% from 1.7%, UK GfK consumer confidence at -14 from -13, eurozone consumer confidence at -17.0 from -16.5, and the US leading index at -0.1%. The rest of the list is largely TradingView chart commentary, most of it on gold around the $4,030-4,110 area, plus a QQQ piece from afurs1 watching the $695-700 zone; these are individual authors' technical views rather than news, and TradingView's own disclaimer notes they are not recommendations.
