Hot September CPI drives the whole tape

Everything of substance in this feed today traces back to one number. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported September headline CPI up 3.7% year over year against a 3.6% consensus, with a 0.6% monthly rise, and core CPI accelerating to 2.6% from 2.4% in August, also above forecasts. Long-dated Treasury yields jumped on the print and market odds of a Fed rate hike by December moved to roughly 50%. The Nasdaq fell around 1.9% to 2.1%, the S&P 500 about 1.1% to 1.3%, and the VIX rose roughly 10% to just under 17. Growth, semis and anything funded in the capital markets took the brunt of it.

Wolfspeed down 16%

The biggest single move read in full was Wolfspeed, off 16.0% to $23.99 and a session low of $23.94. The article frames this as the unwinding of the pop from the October 7 announcement of a conditional $1.5bn, 30-year loan commitment from the U.S. Department of War for domestic silicon carbide manufacturing, which had sent the stock up nearly 20% after hours. That commitment is subject to due diligence, final agreements, government authorisations and appropriations, with no guarantee financing ever arrives, and investors have had time to read the caveats. Adding to it: a prospectus covering resale of up to 58.15 million shares plus warrant provisions in the DoW structure, raising dilution fears, a consensus Hold rating with a $25.00 average target, a recent strong sell downgrade, and a last reported quarter showing revenue down 24.1% year over year to $149.6m with negative gross margins. The 52-week high was $80.82.

Affirm down 10.3% on funding costs

Affirm slid 10.3% to $69.85, the steepest decline among BNPL names. The logic given is direct: Affirm funds its loans through capital markets borrowing rather than deposits, so a yield spike feeds straight into funding costs and squeezes the economics of its 0% APR products. Goldman Sachs had cut its target from $115 to $103 the prior session while keeping a Buy, following TD Cowen's cut from $124 to $110 earlier in the month, and CFO Robert O'Hare's disclosed plan to sell about 65,591 shares sat in the background. For comparison, Klarna fell only a fraction as much and PayPal was barely changed. Next earnings are November 5, and the 52-week high is $90.44.

Nvidia down 3.6%, with China and Microsoft in the mix

Nvidia fell 3.6% toward a session low of $220.21, against a 52-week high of $243.37 set weeks earlier. Beyond the rate backdrop, the piece cites IDC data showing Nvidia's share of China's AI data-centre chip market dropped to 34% in the first half of 2026, with roughly 678,000 AI accelerators shipped, down 44% year over year, as Huawei expanded. Microsoft also unveiled its third-generation Maia 300 custom chip with plans to deploy over a million units starting 2027, feeding the hyperscaler-builds-its-own worry. Jensen Huang, speaking in London, said he would halt chip supply to any customer developing unsafe AI. The $235bn buyback authorised in late September has not produced sustained buying. Separate headline-only items note AMD among the day's market-cap movers and AI infrastructure stocks falling on rate worries, which is the same story from another angle.

A long run of 52-week lows

Seven names were read in full hitting 52-week lows, and the cluster skews heavily to financials and real estate. Carlyle Group touched $35.55, down nearly 36% over the year, with Piper Sandler having initiated at overweight and a $54 target, Syniverse working with Jefferies to restructure a $984m first-lien loan, and a possible joint bid with CVC for Bauwatch. Brookfield hit $35.68, down 21.12% on the year, after a Q2 where EPS of $0.14 missed the $0.65 estimate though revenue of $19.41bn far exceeded forecasts and distributable earnings before realisations rose 15% to $1.4bn. Opendoor fell to $1.96, down 73.44% over twelve months, with Q2 revenue of $883m short of the $902.62m expected, a $0.17 loss per share versus $0.08 expected, revenue down 37% year over year, and a completed $650m convertible note issue due 2030. Newmark hit $11.38, down 38.08% and 43% off its $19.84 high, despite record Q2 revenue of $888.4m up 17% and an S&P upgrade to BBB-; CEO Barry Gosin plans to step down at end-2026. Enterprise Financial Services hit $15.75, down 19.07% on the year and 35% off its high, with a 7.8% dividend yield. Acadia Realty hit $17.97, down 6.56%, after Q2 revenue of $95.42m beat the $88.68m expected and KeyBanc upgraded to Overweight with a $25 target. Supernus closed at $40.50, down 16.83% on the year, with Q2 revenue of $219.1m beating but an adjusted loss of $1.01 per share against an expected $0.43 profit, alongside a pending merger with Indivior that would create roughly $2.2bn pro forma revenue and $888m adjusted EBITDA. Rithm Capital and Cornerstone Total Return also hit lows per headline only, and on the other side CeriBell, Clear Channel Outdoor and IFF printed 52-week highs, again headline only.

Elsewhere in the feed, headline only

Several items worth knowing exist but were not read in full: eight US states have sued OpenAI claiming ChatGPT harms children; a ship sank in the Strait of Hormuz amid Iranian maritime attacks; Trump said "massive" oil, gas and mineral exploration will begin in Greenland, with Denmark's foreign ministry responding that any US exploration must fall within Greenlandic law; Fed's Goolsbee said the Fed must prevent a build-up of overheating and that he dislikes telegraphing moves ahead of meetings; and the New York Fed desk plans roughly $14.6bn of reinvestment purchases between October 15 and November 13. There are also headline-only roundups on bank earnings winners and misses, asset managers posting record AUM and strong inflows with mixed share reactions, and Wall Street banks pointing to a strong deal pipeline. Thursday brings PPI, retail sales, jobless claims and oil inventories, plus results from Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab and Alcoa.

The rest is noise

A large share of the remaining 200 items is filler: dozens of TradingView chart opinions on gold, EURUSD, BTC and similar, routine Form 4 and Form 144 filings, dividend and option-activity notices, and several press-release style items from obscure firms. Nothing in that bucket carries substance worth a line.
