Applied Materials drops after investor day

Applied Materials was the largest mover in the feed, down 6.69% on the day, with the article noting an 8.1% mid-day decline to $457.46 and an intraday low of $452.81. The cause is specific: at its Investor Day at SEMICON West in San Francisco, the company declined to give a wafer fabrication equipment industry spending forecast, citing cleanroom availability, supply-chain constraints and energy infrastructure financing as reasons visibility is poor. Management did lay out a long-range plan, more than two percentage points of WFE share gain from 2025 to 2030, non-GAAP gross margin around 54%, and service revenue above $12 billion by 2030, but investors fixed on a reported slide in its WFE share from 20.0% in 2024 to 17.9% in 2025. Evercore ISI kept an Outperform and a $700 target after the $5 billion EPIC Center unveiling with TSMC, Samsung, Intel and Micron as partners. CEO Gary Dickerson talked up AI compute demand. At roughly 39 to 40 times forward earnings, the stock had little room for an unanswered question, and it closed below both its 20-day and 50-day moving averages.

The broader chip and AI backdrop

That sits inside a wider semi theme running through the feed. Headline-only items flag a deepening global chip selloff tied to AI worries and China competition, an analysis piece arguing the brutal session for chip stocks shows the AI trade is turning, an analyst note giving seven reasons CXMT's claims don't threaten Micron and Sandisk, and a BofA poll showing tech overweight at its highest since August 2020. Separately, Arm shares fell after a jury ruled for Qualcomm in their license dispute, with Qualcomm saying the jury found Arm breached the agreement. Nvidia is reported by Les Echos to have bought stakes in four French tech startups. The tape itself was quiet at the index level: S&P 500 essentially flat at 7,806, Dow down 0.35%, Nasdaq off 0.15%, while the Nikkei fell 1.82%.

Defensive and mid-cap winners

Several of the day's gainers were read in full and share a rotation theme. Erie Indemnity rose 2.57%, with the article putting the mid-day move at 3.1% to $232.16 and attributing it to no company news at all, rather a shift into low-beta dividend-paying insurers while tech sold off; it notes Argus lifted its target to $276 in mid-September, insiders bought about $1.4 million of stock over twelve months against $0.1 million sold, and Q3 results are due October 29 with a pre-recorded webcast October 30. Garmin was up 3.70% on two company releases: the third-generation MARQ watch line, six premium models with AMOLED displays starting at $2,500, and delivery of its 1,000th G1000 flight deck retrofit for King Air aircraft to the U.S. Army, with Autothrottle and Autoland certification planned later this year. A MarketBeat consensus of eight ratings puts the target at $310.17; Q3 results land October 28. Centene rose 2.78% to a 52-week high of $69.64, up about 90% over a year, with Argus upgrading to buy at $80, Cantor Fitzgerald at Overweight with $75, and Bernstein SocGen Outperform at $79, the latter focused on the CFO transition. Urban Outfitters gained 2.61% to an all-time high of $85.44 after eight straight record sales and profit quarters; Q2 fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS was $1.72 against $1.73 expected on revenue of $1.66 billion versus $1.65 billion forecast, and BMO Capital started coverage at Market Perform with an $80 target.

Freight and China internet highs

Expeditors International, up 0.86%, touched an all-time high of $195.73, a 71.5% total return over a year, trading at a $25.4 billion market cap and 28.4 times earnings. Q2 EPS was $2.03 against $1.69 consensus; UBS raised its target to $210 from $191 on a Buy and lifted its Q3 estimate to $2.18 from $2.11 citing strong airfreight rates and higher ocean volumes, Stifel went to $190 from $184 on Hold, and BNP Paribas Exane started at Neutral with $180, calling Q3 potentially the highest EBIT quarter in years on tight capacity. JOYY, up 0.43%, hit a 52-week high of $82.63, up roughly 47% over the year at about $4 billion market cap, after Q2 revenue rose 16.3% to $591 million against a $569.85 million forecast, helped by ad tech and e-commerce offsetting slower live-streaming, alongside continued buybacks.

What Wednesday brings

A widely-viewed post from Walter Bloomberg lays out tomorrow's US calendar, and it's heavy. September CPI at 8:30 AM ET is the main event, with expectations cited at 3.6% to 3.7% headline year-on-year, about 0.6% month-on-month, core around 2.5% year-on-year and 0.2% month-on-month. Earnings before the open include Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, BlackRock, State Street, Fastenal and Progressive, with ASML around 1 AM. The Fed Beige Book lands at 2 PM, ahead of the October 27 to 28 FOMC. Separate headline items note major US banks posted solid third-quarter loan growth but more competition for deposits, and that Wall Street edged lower as chips fell while markets digested those bank results.

Energy, oil and geopolitics

Crude was firm, WTI at $94.68 and Brent $106.18 in the quote tables. Headline items point to the reason the feed is noisy here: UKMTO reported an incident in the Strait of Hormuz with a container ship struck by an unidentified projectile, Iran's IRGC Navy chief threatened US warships approaching Hormuz, Saudi civil defence issued an alert for the Eastern Province, and Netanyahu and Trump reportedly discussed renewed strikes on Iran. Morgan Stanley raised its Q4 2026 Brent forecast to $105 from $100 and Q1 2027 to $100 from $95. US diesel futures jumped 4.5% to a two-week high despite Trump's agreement to suspend sanctions on Russian diesel exports, with Republicans publicly balking at that deal.

Corporate odds and ends

Several headline-only items worth knowing exist without detail behind them: CVS settled with the DOJ for $315 million over opioid prescriptions, with enhanced DEA oversight; Advanced Drainage Systems is acquiring StormTrap for $530 million from PSP Capital; AbbVie reported positive Crohn's disease trial results for Skyrizi; Lockheed Martin partnered with Avio on rocket motor production; Fitch moved Lennar's outlook to negative on margin compression and demand risk; S&P upgraded GEO Group to BB after a $950 million debt paydown; Muddy Waters disclosed a short on Edison International over the Eaton Fire. On the mover side the feed flags Vertex sliding 4%, Molina up 3.5%, First Solar up 3.5% and International Flavors & Fragrances up 4%, but only as headlines, with no explanation attached.

The rest of the feed

The remainder is mostly filler: a long run of Form 4 and Form 144 filings (Lattice Semiconductor, Hercules Capital, AMD, Richardson Electronics, Blue Biofuels, Arqit), Nasdaq's routine options-activity and agricultural commodity roundups, and a large block of TradingView chart posts on gold, bitcoin, EURUSD and individual tickers. One substantive regulatory item: India's SEBI published a consultation paper proposing that all listed companies appoint a monitoring agency for equity issuances regardless of size, with those agencies reporting directly to stock exchanges and exchanges empowered to fine companies that don't cooperate.
