Brief

Bank earnings day, mixed results

The biggest single theme in the feed is the start of Q3 bank reporting. Wells Fargo, covered in full, slipped 1.6% pre-open: net income of $6.0 billion or $1.87 a share was up 13% year over year and a touch above consensus, but revenue of $21.87 billion missed by roughly $440 million, with the shortfall in capital markets and Corporate and Investment Banking, and the Corporate segment posting a loss where income was expected. Net interest income of $12.52 billion also came in light, though management held full-year NII guidance and guided to about $13 billion for Q4. Consumer, Commercial and Wealth all beat. A HUD probe into past mortgage lending programs has been hanging over the name. Alongside that, headline-only items say Goldman Sachs beat by $3.92 with revenue above estimates and profit rising on equities strength, Citi's profit jumped 40% on investment banking, services and wealth, and JPMorgan shares fell as profit missed and fixed-income trading disappointed. Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and BlackRock report Wednesday.

BioNTech trial miss

BioNTech fell nearly 6% pre-open after its mRNA cancer immunotherapy BNT113 failed the first of two dual primary endpoints, progression-free survival, in the AHEAD-MERIT Phase 2/3 trial in unresectable recurrent or metastatic HPV16-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The trial tested BNT113 plus pembrolizumab against pembrolizumab alone first-line, and the PFS improvement was not statistically significant at this interim look. CMO Özlem Türeci said the data support continued evaluation and show the drug is engaging its intended mechanism. The second dual primary endpoint, overall survival, is still outstanding. The article notes this lands on top of existing uncertainty: co-founders Ugur Sahin and Türeci plan to leave by the end of 2026 to start an independent venture, Sahin's direct shareholding has gone to zero with his stake now held indirectly, and Morgan Stanley had previously trimmed its target. Shares were at $90.15 against a prior close of $95.84, nearer the $79.52 52-week low than the $124 high.

VF upgraded twice on Vans

VF Corp rallied 3.9% pre-open on two upgrades. Piper Sandler went to Overweight from Neutral with a $20 target, up from $16, citing its Fall Teen Survey of roughly 9,000 respondents showing Vans holding a top footwear spot among males and ending a multi-survey decline, plus gains among upper-income male teens. Truist moved to Buy from Hold and nearly doubled its target to $20 from $14, arguing fashion is rotating away from athletic looks and retailers are filling shelf space vacated by Nike lifestyle pullbacks. A JPMorgan upgrade to Neutral the prior session had already helped. Stifel stayed at Hold with a $17 target, flagging Vans wholesale orders as the swing factor. Separately in the feed, a headline-only Piper note says Nike continues to lose teen share as On Running gains, which fits the same survey work.

Domino's beats but comps stall

Domino's fell 3.1% pre-open despite beating on both lines, with diluted EPS of $4.60 against roughly $4.36 expected and revenue of $1.185 billion. The problem was US same-store sales up just 0.3%, down from 5.3% franchise comp growth a year earlier, plus year-to-date operating cash flow off 5.7% to $520.6 million and free cash flow down 7.2% to $459.8 million. It was the first earnings call under new CEO Joe Jordan. Morgan Stanley had cut its target to $357 from $370 the day before, keeping Equalweight and citing category and TAM concerns, quick-service softness and rising rates. The stock sits about 32% below its $442.35 52-week high.

J&J beats on EPS, devices drag

Johnson & Johnson slid 2.5% pre-open. Adjusted EPS of $2.59 beat the $2.53 consensus and revenue of $25.4 billion was slightly ahead and up 5.9%, but GAAP EPS was just $0.09 and GAAP net earnings fell 95.9% to $210 million, reflecting a one-time charge for the proposed talc litigation resolution, the Firefly Bio acquisition and the Sail Biomedicines collaboration. Pharma sales rose 7.7% to $16.76 billion while medtech rose only 2.5% to $8.6 billion, flat outside the US, with the article attributing the weakness to geopolitical issues. Full-year adjusted EPS guidance was raised to $11.05 to $11.15 against $11.08 consensus. The proposed $5.5 billion talc settlement remains conditional on claimant acceptance. The piece notes zero positive and 12 negative EPS revisions in the last 90 days.

Visa gets China clearing approval

Visa rose 1.4% pre-open after the People's Bank of China approved Visa Information Technology (Beijing) to begin formal preparations for a domestic bankcard clearing institution. Visa has up to a year to complete preparations before applying for a full operating licence. CEO Ryan McInerney called it a significant step forward. Mastercard and American Express already hold similar approvals. Baird raised its target to $430 from $420 on Monday with an Outperform rating ahead of fiscal Q4 results on October 27, expecting a modest beat but some growth deceleration into fiscal 2027. The stock set a 52-week high of $391.81 in the prior session and traded to $394.83 pre-market.

Chips, oil and the macro backdrop

The session's wider tone, per the TSX futures piece, was a split tape: Dow futures up, Nasdaq futures down 0.7%, chipmakers under pressure with the industry tracker off 2.7% on Monday and Korean tech hit too, partly on reports of advances by China's ChangXin Memory Technologies narrowing the AI gap. Vital Knowledge noted the debate is why tech has traded so poorly for several sessions. Oil fell after Russia said diesel exports may exceed the volumes in its supply deal with the US, pulling back from Monday's spike that followed Houthi strikes on Saudi infrastructure; gold rebounded. September CPI lands Wednesday, with the Fed expected to hold this month after September's hike. Headline-only items round this out: OPEC raised its 2027 demand growth forecast to 2.55M bpd while cutting 2026 to 180,000 bpd, Saudi production reportedly at about 8.4M b/d in September, the Houthis warning Riyadh of a harsh response, the Kremlin denying the diesel deal is linked to Ukraine talks, and a BofA poll showing tech overweight at its highest since August 2020.

Analyst notes and smaller company items

Mizuho raised Energy Transfer to $26 from $25 with an Outperform rating, expecting commodity earnings to moderate from strong Q2 2026 levels but staying constructive; the note cites the Vaquero acquisition expanding the Delaware footprint as a strategically sensible if pricey bolt-on, projects ramping, and the Waha price recovery reducing optimisation gains. The stock was $20.41, up 30.41% year to date with a 6.66% yield. Needham lifted SentinelOne to $31 from $26, keeping Buy, after a pre-quiet-period conversation convinced it the three emerging products, now over half of total ARR, are not cannibalising endpoint; net revenue retention is back above 110% and revenue grew 21% to $1.1 billion over twelve months. Note the tension in the feed: separate headline-only items say SentinelOne fell 7% after announcing a $1.25 billion convertible notes offering. Dauch Corporation named Nathan Iles CFO effective December 1, joining as SVP Finance on November 2, succeeding Christopher May who becomes EVP and Chief Administrative Officer overseeing IT and HR; Iles was most recently CFO at Standard Motor Products. A long tail of other analyst headlines sits in the list without detail, including Northland cutting Enovix on silicon anode delays, Mizuho cutting Enlight on valuation, Wells Fargo cutting Bristol-Myers on Eliquis concerns, Jefferies initiating Electra at Buy, and Deutsche Bank raising its outlook on semiconductor equipment.

Noise in the feed

A large share of the 200 items is retail chart commentary from TradingView on gold, EURUSD, Bitcoin and index futures, which is directional opinion rather than news, plus routine SEC Form 4 and Form 144 filings with no accompanying detail. Two Trump Truth Social posts were read in full and contain no market content: both are reposts of other users' screenshots, one about Mike Tyson and loyalty, the other a Fox commentary clip about midterm campaigning.
