Boeing 737 MAX software fault

The one piece of genuine news in this feed is the WSJ report, carried twice by Investing.com, that Boeing has found a software glitch on the 737 MAX which can disable an automated navigation function during a landing after a missed approach. It showed up after a cockpit software update and can trigger when pilots change their planned flight path following a missed approach, leaving crews to fly manually without some autopilot functions at low altitude. Boeing told MAX operators in late August that it did not consider this a safety risk, and is working on both a fix and a procedure for pilots to restore the function. Southwest and United have asked Boeing not to deliver new aircraft carrying the affected software and to use the earlier version instead. The FAA is investigating. Boeing says it first learned of the issue in November 2024 but decided then it didn't meet the criteria for a safety review, opening a formal review only this month after more airline feedback. The permanent fix was originally scheduled for early 2028 and Boeing says it is trying to pull that forward. The article notes the problem could also touch certification of the MAX 10 and the introduction of the MAX 7, and that it isn't clear how many aircraft currently fly the affected software. A separate headline-only item repeats the same story.

Hormuz and oil

Several headline-only items, from Javier Blas and DeItaone on X, say Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with Trump quoted as saying Iran wanted to open the strait immediately because they were "losing so badly." One of those posts adds that the offer came via Qatari mediators and included halting regional fighting within seven days. None of these items explain the reasoning beyond the quotes. The price panels embedded in the Investing.com pages show Brent at 104.45, down 2.02%, and WTI at 92.44, down 2.29%, with gold futures at 4,320.50, up 0.52%, and silver at 64.71, up 1.11%. Those panels also carry the S&P 500 at 7,743.41 (+0.51%), the Dow at 51,828.62 (+0.93%) and the US 10-year at 5.167%.

Barclays initiates Ligand

Fintel via Nasdaq reports Barclays started coverage of Ligand Pharmaceuticals (the OTC line, LGNDZ) at Overweight on 25 September. That follows HC Wainwright reiterating Buy on 24 September and Citigroup maintaining Buy on 23 September. The consensus count for September is 16 ratings: 7 strong buy, 8 buy, 1 hold, or 93.8% positive, up from 15 ratings the prior month. The consensus target figures in the piece are reported as $0.00 mean and median, down 76.23% from $0.01, which looks like a data artefact of the OTC line rather than anything meaningful. The article describes Ligand as a licensing-driven biopharma whose main platform is Captisol, used to improve solubility, stability and bioavailability of active ingredients.

Form 4 and 144 filings with no content

A large block of the feed is SEC filing stubs from Investing.com: Form 4s for Worthington Industries, RGC Resources, RENN Fund, EuroDry, Bending Spoons, Centene, World Acceptance, Texas Pacific Land, Manager Directed Portfolios, iShares China Large-Cap and Nuveen Dividend Advantage Municipal, plus Form 144s for Sinclair and Qualcomm. The ones read in full contain nothing but a headline and boilerplate, no transaction detail at all. The related headline-only items do give amounts: Horizon Kinetics bought Texas Pacific Land stock for $340 and RENN Fund shares for $2,298, and RGC Resources directors Williamson and Johnston bought $56,570 and $22,193 of common stock respectively. All small.

TradingView chart posts

Well over half the section is TradingView technical posts, and they carry no news. Eight of them were read in full and are the same template from a single author, Alpha-GoldFX, on AVNT, POL, SPELL, PUMP, SUI, ENA and SPK, each describing a "bullish momentum" wedge with identical wording and only the projected percentage swapped out, from 10-20% on AVNT up to 70-80% on PUMP, each ending with a request for likes and a Telegram link. The remaining dozens of chart headlines cover gold, bitcoin, ether, XRP, various majors, MSTR, Tesla and indices, all headline-only, all opinion rather than reporting.

Other headlines worth knowing exist

A handful of one-line items you might want to note but which have no detail behind them here: Aramco is reportedly weighing a standalone gas unit valued at up to $100bn, per Bloomberg; Trump says he approved fuel economy standards ending the Biden EV mandate; a nor'easter has left over 100,000 customers without power in the US Northeast with more than 400 flights cancelled; North Carolina regulators rejected a Duke Energy gas plant; Bill Ackman says PSUS and PS are now listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange; and The Transcript quotes JPMorgan's CIB CEO saying private credit has stabilised while still worrying about secondary and tertiary players in a downturn, and separately describing supply chains moving back to the US. Trump also has headline items on a predicted Cuba deal, a call with Venezuela's Rodriguez, and rejecting AI integration with China.
